I have been wondering for some time what everyone does for a living. This is probably because in my field in my relatively small town here in Florida, there is only one other person I know of that commutes by bicycle with any regularity. I have met a few people that were auto-mechanics (ironically), retail, restaurants, and hospitality. On this board, there seem to be a lot of educators, but I don't know any here where I live that commute by bike.

I am not a commuter but ride on the weekends. Retired courier from a well known logistics company. Second career, teaching math remediation to middle school students.

Matt, COVID has changed my job in that I'm now working from home and only rarely go into NYC as needed to do stuff in the datacenter or support other work, for example. My "park and ride" routine was driving from Bloomfield to Leonia. Then jump on the bike and ride up the hill through Ft Lee and over the GWB into Manhattan. I also used to do the full ride into the city only as much as three days a week. Nowadays, I get to do some of the local roads in my area that I haven;t ridden in a long time before. They are mostly through towns like Montclair, Cedar Grove, South Orange, Millburn, etc. I have a longer Booton ride that I haven't done in years. Will have to revisit it on a weekend if time permits. I usually end up doing more family stuff on the weekends with my wife and 8 yr old son. How is your neighborhood? Looks like you are a suburb of Trenton or Philly.

I'm fortunate that I have showers at work and can keep a huge locker full of suits and dress clothes. But I'm riding in rarely these days b/c of COVID and having my kids at home full time from school.
Your commute areas sound somewhat congested; I'm lucky my roads are through suburbia and farm country. I was curious how you manage the congestion and traffic; hopefully there is less during COVID times.

Municipal construction engineering tech, on paper mostly dealing with material specification and inspection. With 35 years in municipal construction, in reality, "the old guy who knows this stuff" that puts out the day to day fires that crop up in urban underground construction and repair of 150 year old infrastructure.

Presbyterian Minister so not on the list to vote on. My commute is so far it'd take me longer to get the bike out the door then it would to just walk to the office, especially since the bike requires putting on shoes and the walk doesn't. Upside to being a minister is I get to be a little eccentric as long as I'm not too weird so I consider church space to be shoes optional except on most Sundays.

Software engineer. Judging by other forums where bike-commuting is discussed, I'm not surprised to see "computers/technology" toward the top of this poll. We can be an odd bunch, and I think employers are used to giving us a little more flexibility than other professions.

I belong to a family of string players, and we've been to some of the "lesser" Chicago shops. I'm an amateur jazz double bassist, and am also teaching myself to play jazz on the cello, which was my first instrument.

I retired from the Navy, then became a patent attorney, although I'm currently working for the "other side" (US Patent & Trademark Office) as a patent examiner in artificial intelligence.

Very cool. I have a handful of patents, but in more mundane fields, so I can only imagine how hard it is to keep up with something like AI.

I just accepted a new position that is a promotion and gets me closer to where I want to be career wise but now I have to be a grown up and wear clothes that actually need ironed so I’m going to have to re-think commuting. The VanMoof I was going to buy in the spring may be a late winter purchase instead.
