Cracked hub flange
Just found a crack originating in the spoke hole on a shimano 600 hub. There is one almost as big on the other flange as well. This on my do it all road bike. Is this a common failure? Was it commuting over pot holes, rough terrain over the mountains, dirt tracks in the park? Its tensioned to 70 kg/f. Ridden with 28mm rolly polly tires. Any suggestions to keep from blowing up my wheel in the future (after I replace the hub).

Yikes! I would quit using that wheel right away. I had the same thing happen with a Campy Chorus hub, but it was replaced under warranty because it was less than 3 years old. Not a common occurrence but it happens.

Mostly likely causes of cracking as shown/described, not necessarily in order:
- normal end of life for a high mileage aluminum hub
- result of incorrect/uneven spoke tension in normal use, due either to initial assembly, or failure to monitor & maintain proper spoke tension in use
- manufacturing defect or defective/out-of-spec material
- prolonged, extremely harsh riding conditions beyond design intent of hub (would generally result in collateral failures of spokes, bearings, rims)

I've never seen that before. I've seen large hub flanges break when laced with radial spokes, but this is completely different. I would assume this was a defective hub.

Its Use Life has Ended.. nothing but radioactive wastes lasts for ever..
If the hub shell was steel it wouldn't do that , but nobody wants to build those .
as the hub flange is as hard as the spoke , and Rust is inevitable.
Manufacturing Defect, its not covered after a Year, and those [600] are 20+ years old ..
Buy a new wheel and get on with your Life./.

Cheap Shimano hubs...have to replace them every 20 years. What's the world coming to?

Profile hub flange cracks
Under normal cruising street conditions on a 29" BMX (S&M ATF) with Profile Elite hubs professionally laced, my front hub flange has cracked twice. The rear cracked once. The first time my foot stuck in the front spokes and pulled two spokes hard enough to break a chunk off the flange. The hub shell was replaced through warranty. I assembled the new wheel and experienced the same type of break on the flange, but the reason is unknown. The third time was my rear Profile Elite hub flange. All breaks look as if it was a pulling force. I only cruise the streets. I do not bunny hop, jump, etc... It's just crazy to me. All hubs were gloss or flat black. This post is mostly to tell the story, but if you have input, please give. Aloha
