Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Let me share this here too I guess.

It's a 2003 Lemond Tourmelet, Dura Ace 7700 RD and 7800 FD, Ultegra 6700 brifters and 6800 brakes, A700 crank with Wickwerks 53/34 rings, 13-25 Ultegra Cassette, and a Williams System 30 wheelset (rear rim replaced). 19 lbs 14 ozs as in the picture below.

Close up of the "non-standard 53/34 crank, man does it shift sweetly.

Next up is the Giordana XL Super which I think is a 1997 but I don't really know. Got it from the factory as NOS frameset last year. This sweet ride is made from Excell Podium steel. Unfortunately there were no painted Podium forks left but they were able to provide a chromed Excell Eco fork.

It's built up with a Campagnolo 11 speed Athena groupset and a set of Shamal Ultra wheels now. This bike is 19 lbs and 9 ozs as you see it in the picture below with pedals, bottle cages, sensors, etc. So basically as I would ride it minus the water bottle and saddle bag. And as the grimy bar tape shows, this is my favorite bike.

This is how I ran it most of the year with a more classic looking Open Pro wheelset.

Nice and shiny paint.

This is a 1999 Schwinn Circuit that I foolishly sold one day. This was one of the Scott built Schwinns with a sweet Reynolds 853 frame and not so sweet aluminum fork. I keep hoping this shows back up on the local classifieds one day. It had a decent Shimano 105 setup on it.

And I'll finish sharing with "my" 2000 Lemond Zurich. Reynolds 853 frame with a C.F. fork and an Ultegra groupset. Most of my PRs were set on this a few years ago. Then I loaned it to a friend who is still, "bringing it back one day". LOL!

Most of the time I ran a handbuilt set of Zen Cyclery wheels on it but don't have a picture of it in that configuration. Hopefully one day I'll see this again.

I think that's all the "modern" bikes I have that meet the spirit of this thread.

Cool bikes!

I hope my 2002 Bianchi Eros counts as "modern steel"? If so I'll post pix.

My Mr. Pink shortly after I got it...will post up a new photo once I get the new crankset installed. It currently has new wheels (ENVEs went to my new cannondale) and upgraded the SRAM Rival to Dura Ace. Gonna throw the White Industries crank on and call it done.

For a steel road bike, it's awesome! I had 32c tubeless tires on it at one point, but the DA brakes wouldn't fit around them.

Seriously, it's not the hot or not thread, so if you don't have anything nice to say, you can keep your mouth shut. Thank you.

I beg your pardon?
I understand this is an appreciation thread, not an indifference thread. Nothing either nice or mean about my comment except you took it that way. For all I knew, you WANTED something "immodest." No reason a steel bike should be prim and prudish, is there?

Yeah, there seems to be no shortage of deusche-baggery.

Yeah I didn't see anything at all wrong with your comments. I thought his reaction was over the top and rude, and from a moderator at that.

I totally consider this ride of mine as "immodest" too and have no issues with anyone else stating that.

Yeah, I was so excited when I picked up the frame that I didn't notice at the time. I'm going to get that panel re-sprayed, but it'll be a couple months before I'll have time to drop the bike back off.

There you go!

Actually, coming from a moderator, I understand the chastisement a bit more. As @wgscott pointed out, there's an overabundance of snark and rudeness, and if one doesn't become immune to it (which moderators aren't allowed to do), one may begin to see it everywhere.

The "LeMond" logo on the drive-side seat tube is oriented incorrectly - the "L" should be at the top of the seat tube.

true - I thought something was off, couldn't put my finger on it til the orientation was mentioned. most wouldn't notice it unless they are familiar with Lemonds, early or later. if it isn't lacquered inplace, then you can peel it and redux the seatube logo. but the color and ride are beautiful.
