So all I can say is that she now understands and is being very supportive. I haven't been able to get her to ride with me though.

Only "arguments" we've gotten into over cycling -
1) When I chose to buy higher quality components for my (third) road bike than he thinks I need to put on it (like Ritchey WCS wheels rather than just the comps even though he got custom Mavic/Hugi for his)
2) Whether we're riding road or mtb
3) Where/when the bike vacations will be each year
Ah, a good marriage does require compromise!

Once I trained my wife to multiply the ride time I tell her by 50% and add it to come with an actual time we haven't had any problems.
For example, if I say, "I'm goin riding, be back in two hours," she multiplies 2 x. 50 to get 1 and adds that back to 2 to get 3 and knows I'll be back in three hours.

Today, just as an example. I got off early, lucky me, and left about 1pm with a friend for a long training ride. STP in July. Our plan was to ride 60 miles in just under 4 and 1/2 hrs to be back in time for my wife, who is beautiful and pregnant, to go to aerobics at 5:30pm. Everything was going well, we were headed back with about 16 miles to go and my friends front wheel slipped off the pavement and he wiped pretty good. He broke his left brake/shifter and scrapped himself up pretty good and so we couldn't continue. It was 4:45 and the only person I could call was my wife, who was getting ready to leave. She wasn't happy but agreed to come and pick us up. She missed aerobics and took it really well considering she had to come and get me yesterday as well after my 2nd flat tire on a 30 mile ride, she missed her workout that day as well. I wonder how long till she leaves me out there....

I am not suggesting you take my opinions and advice on your relationship too seriously. After all i am just a stranger on a forum. But for what it is worth..:
I am in commited relationship but i would like to paraphrase Aragorn when he said "My Friends, You Bow to No One!"...
By that i mean a few things. Firstly i am with the female poster who said that you didn't handle that first situation very well. However i don't agree with the rest of her stance at all. For one i am assuming you did mean your response in the best of ways. Your wife not letting you live that one down (just because you erred) is senseless and spitefull. IMO she should cut that out, immediatly.
Secondly, your story about noticing a hot girl and it turning out to be your wife. That is total BS as well, sounds like she has got insecurity issues, which i am guessing are -if you have never had an affair and don't intend to- unfounded and unfair.
She should be honored and happy for chrissakes that you think she is hot and that you enjoy her physical appearance and are man enough to admit that you like looking at other people too. Of course the latter is obvious and shouldn't be pointed out a lot, but if you did it that one time in a fun way without intending to make her uncomfortable she has no bussiness giving you $h1t.
So, i am not saying like SinCityCycler (the more post i read by that guy the more idiotic he seems to get) to have an affair or that your wife is a bad person or partner. But it does sounds like she has some issues that both you guys should work out for everyone's sake. I am sure you are not perfect either so it will have to be a two way street. I hope it all works out and that you can both continue to enjoy cycling.
Oh and um, i wouldn't mind a picture as well ha ha.

This whole "money spend on bikes conflicts" thing. Well i don't know, sounds to me like lots could be avoided by communication and agreements. Like take a little time to talk and set down some guidelines. For example how much cash each of you can realistically spend on hobbies. Then stick to that (unless there are VERY good reasons not to, in in that case re-negotiate) and don't have arguments over something so silly but still potentially messed up.
As someone else said: "Sex and money, those are the two things that do in a marriage most frequently".
As for my own situation. Well i have a girlfriend that i really digg. One of the many things i digg is that she can cycle circles around me on most days. So we both cycle lots independently and sometimes together. She understand my passion for cycling and bikes even if she experiences hers in somewhat different ways (She is not a forum Junkie for example, but just give me time ha ha, the Lure of the Dark Side is Strong!!

Neither of my two wives and assorted GFs ever liked to ride and always gave me crap about it. Now I have a GF who let's me ride as much as I want and loves to ride as much as I do...I might be in big trouble!

Somehow the fact that I've put more miles on my bikes than my car for years
seems to not bolster my case at all. Still I think it's easier to ask for forgiveness
than permisssion.

Cycling was getting me into trouble until just recently, when my wife decided she wanted to get back into it, and started joining me on some rides. I put her on the spot and asked her why the sudden interest and she said, "well, I figured, 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em'". I have not yet decided if that's good or bad, but so far the experiences have been very positive. We did an organized ride this past Saturday and she got to ride a demo high-end Specialized ("Ruby Pro") which is leagues better than her old MTB/Hybrid/400lb bike. Now I'm a little worried she's going to be asking me about dropping $5K on a new bike, when just a few months ago I was thinking the opposite

I know when I ride with my wife...I can't get too far ahead...even if I get no real physical activity from the ride...I need to stay there or else I hear it...so I try to make times to ride that I know whe is busy etc...so I can get my workout....my bike workout that is.

My wife is a non-cyclist who regularly works 80-hour weeks, hates to sweat, and is so tight she squeaks when she walks. Maybe that last part is just her new shoes... Her 7 year-old bike has about 10 miles on it, but I always keep it clean, adjusted, lubed and aired-up so it will be ready if she changes her priorities some day.
Of course, every dime and every minute I spend on cycling (or any other hobby) is a point of contention with her.
However, I think she appreciates the lost weight, lower blood pressure, and the fitness that I've gained from cycling. Somewhere. Down deep. Way, way down there.
All of that helps explain why I need and love to ride as much as I do.
