Has the OP considered that maybe, Google, being a competitor of Apple, doesn't release the API for the cycling directions for use by others?

That wouldn't be very Google of Google.
Historically, it took a year or two for Google Maps various alternative directions (transit and walking directions, of course) to hit smartphones. It the iPhone got bike maps sometime next year, it'd be on par.

He does, and I get irritated with him frequently.
However, please show me the part of this forum that promises to be an echo chamber of adulation for every anti-car self-martyring conspiracy theorist who comes up with some ludicrous example of "persecution". I sometimes come into the threads here where posters advocate "traffic calming" and lowering speed limits until cars are useless, and if I valued my time less, I'd behave much like ILTB. Apple is not conspiring against cyclists. There are a number of possible reasons they do not have the bike directions available in their Map app, and given that you don't know, crying "persecution" with no evidence is a great way to make yourself look rabid.
Part of the reason I do very, very little advocacy is I don't want to be associated with the rabid end of the movement, and frankly, as long as the rabid end exists, I don't want it to succeed.

But then I guess you didn't bother to read the thread.
With posts like this, you're as bad as ILTB.

I admit I haven't read the thread, but...
I live in Ottawa, and Google doesn't have cycling directions here yet. But it does have pedestrian directions, and alternate route suggestions for any given trip. I just plug in the directions as though I were walking and follow the course it gives me.
This won't tell you how long it will take, but given the differences in cycling speeds, I wouldn't trust Google's bike travel times. Most of us know how fast we travel anyways.
Edit: First half of the first page, and already an argument? Where's the love people?
Also, what would a "bicycle" option give us that "walking" wouldn't?

Quite simple. walking directions don't care about one-way streets. You can't trust them for bikes. They also don't care about pedestrian only areas like public staircases (not that there are a huge number of those, but can you imagine following directions that led you to the top a a long staircase?) or tunnels.

One way streets for one, and many of the walking paths that Google knows about are not suitable for cycling (at least in Denver). Also, it always gives you the most direct walking path, and is not always a suitable bicycle route.

Ah, those things never occurred to me, as we don't have many of those things in Ottawa.
Except for one-way streets, but I'm never biking in that part of town.

And yes, I'm a curmudgeon. Deal with it. I mostly come here to watch the monkeys.

Whine some more. The core of my post stands: where is it guaranteed that everyone on the forum has to agree with the OP? It isn't. In this case, he's wrong. Many explanations have been given and largely ignored in favor of a grand conspiracy theory.

You're not a curmudgeon. You're just a fool who's unwilling to admit he's wrong.
But then again, most fools have that problem.

I hope I'm wrong because I would probably get an iphone otherwise, but not having the biking directions is a big negative. The one way streets are one reason, and also they pick up dedicated bike paths. That said, google is a bit slavish with it's devotion to bike paths and can easily send you miles out of your way to get to them!
