Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Smoothie Spin

I bought this NIB Soma Smoothie frame, also a Smoothie CF fork, a couple of months ago, and just started to build it up this past week. I Had purchased a new 105 7000 groupset for the bike, Pro-LIte Bortola clincher/rim wheelset from CRC, and everything else either new or like new. I took my time deciding for sure what I wanted, and was willing to spend. I opted for the 7000 group due to extensive reviews and the price, also, I wanted to go "modern" with 11 speed.

Today, I finished putting it all together and got in the first 15 miles on the bike. It does indeed have an appropriately smooth ride. I have some tuning to do with the shifting, but the 7000 groupset is outstanding. I have a 50/34 crankset, 11-32 cassette and mid -cage derailleur. The front cage I could only get the braze-on, but I need a clamp on. I already had a clamp, but the one I have doesn't seem to work with this derailleur. When attached to the clamp, it is not a good fit, and it looks like the cage cannot extend far enough to the outer ring. I am not sure where the clamp came from or what brand it is, probably off/generic. The rear DR, I cannot get the derailleur to move inward far enough for the chain to jump to the biggest cog. I have had the B screw in to the max, the low limit set to travel as far inward as I can. All other gears work fine. I will have to take a look at the mounting position I think.

Other than the gear issues, the bicycle performed very well. The 105 shifting and braking are really good and clean. The wheels, after just a few, miles are a pleasant surprise. Time and miles will tell for them. The tires are Vittoria Rubino Pro 25mm. The CF fork limits front max. The back will certainly fit a 28mm and I will definitely change to that. The bike fits me really well and I am pleased with the components I opted for. I have not taped the handlebar as of yet. I should have it all adjusted and working properly, contact points set and ready for an all day type ride by mid week.

Naturally, a few pictures. I will get a couple pictures of the front DR/clamp tomorrow. Can't tell from pics, but the cabling is braided type silver/gold.

Pretty bike! Your RD problem sounds strange. Check to see if the chain will mount the big cog by pulling on the cable, bypassing the indexing. That way you can determine if it's adjustment or something else. I'm sure the clamp on the top tube is for photo op only....

Nice bike - I've got one of the Soma Extra Smooth (ES) frames myself. They do ride nice, but will also get up and go when you put the hammer down, as you will find once you get your drivetrain dialed in. I put in 45 miles this morning on the ES; best riding weather of the year so far was this weekend. Enjoy the new whip!

Purty!

It may be the amount of green in the background causing some reflections, but is there a hint of green in the paint under strong sunlight? It almost looks like there is. Beautiful either way.

How do you like the R7000? After sweating the 5800 on my R2 into oblivion I'm intending to have that installed in a couple of weeks.

Smoothie is a standard rear derailer mount ?. 7000 is a Direct Mount ?. Might be the R shifting issue.

Two skinny leg power type. Old school, not as efficient these days, but still turning the gears.

FWIW, check that you have the correct chainline at your crank. Perhaps there is a spacer needed or in the wrong spot and your chainrings aren't actually landing in the right spot under the derailleur.

Also, the run of housing from the rear-most cable stop to the rear caliper looks a bit long. I've had excessively long runs of housing like that push my calipers off center.

Thanks for the suggestions. I realized the housing was a bit long in the back. It also looks like, with the new inward position of the cinch plate/screw, it is a straighter shot with the cable/housing. I looked at a couple videos again and will have to take another look and see if I can figure it out.

First nice bike.

Second, if you exhaust all other possibilities with the rear derailleur, you could look at the hanger itself as it may be bent. It just may need to be tweaked a little.

Happy cycling.
