Derby Lightweight racer
I just pulled a Derby Light Racer down from the rafters and have begun to clean, degrease, and change the cables. I haven't been able to find much info on this bike but it seens like a worthwhile project. I don't think it's a cheap bike, seems on par with a schwinn voyageur I had in '73.

I dont have a pic but i took my park tool pmp-5 pump apart and reassembled it. The end of the plunger had come off and i was afraid i would break it taking the pump apart. Losing my zefal pump prompted me to take the plunge and pry the endcap that the plunger goes through off. All ended well and i have a frame pump again.

fixed cup and freewheel removal
never had much luck removing fixed cups on bb but was motivated to get this french threaded bb off a vitus to install on a gitane with honeycomb rear drops. used a sugino bb wrench and with some persistence and leather gloves, the fixed cup loosened to my surprise. another challenge was removing a regina FW off a suntour superbe large flange hub with the spokes cut off from the wheel. thanks to RJ the bike guy youtube video for guidance on how its done, i managed to remove the FW without any damage to the hub or FW. FW will be used as a paper weight.

I just installed Odyssey Straddle Rods to the Scott-Pedersen SE Brakes on my "85 Cannondale SM600. The original straddle cable and yoke assembly was too lightweight and easy to adjust.
It was very hard to find those rods in the longer length of the 2 that they made which I needed. It is a very solid-feeling set-up.

Well today I removed the stuck dust caps on the Martens built Ribble so I could make sure the play I was feeling was the BB not crank arms. Two days of soaking in PB blaster, heats, tapping with wooden dowel, etc all failed to free them. Quick work though once I drilled a hole in them then took punch and small hammer to them. Couple of taps at angle and they started turning just fine.
Play does appear to be in the BB so now to source the best option. For no good reason than other than "because" I'm trying to get this under 20lbs built up, ready to go. Right about there so I want to make sure every new part that goes on is lighter than what I took off.

No doubt. Vitus 172 feels every bit as light as 531. Maybe it's not as strong, but I wouldn't know it.
I had an early '80s Grand Jubile like that. Great bicycle. And even though it was longer than my 531 Grand Record, it would climb just as well.

Flawless! Confident! Fast! Stupid stable!

Picked up what look to be never used Sampson Stratics pedals today. They’ll go on the Nishiki Maxima today. Yeah, the cleats on the shoes are a pain but I really like the pedals

Nice ! I just got a '75 Continental last week and I plan on keeping it original too, it even has the matching color tape in good shape.
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...st-39-lbs.html
I worked on it today, and I did take the turkey levers, rack and reflectors off but plan on keeping everything else original including the saddle if half-way comfortable. I like how Schwinn put their name on everything, even the Ball Bearing holder in the BB
Where'd you get the fenders?

Finally got around to the final checkover, tuneup, and other niceties on the '98 Trek 6500 mountain bike that I picked up at the Westminster swap meet. And, headed out to Poor Farm Park in Ashland, VA for my first stint of mountain bike riding in about five years.
Jeezus, am I rusty! It didn't help that I forgot the layout of the park, and hit the trails in the middle of the more technical section. Gingerly picked my way to the easier part of the park and proceeded the relearn what I haven't done in years. The bike and I got along fine, and it'll probably be a keeper . . . . . . . at least until I go thru another mood of, "This is stupid . . . I'm a roadie" and sell this one off just like I've done each of its predecessors.
Seems about every three years I get in the mood to do some mountain biking. Which lasts about six months, and I sell the bike.

Today’s set aside for beginning a build I’ve been thinking on for a while. Got a bit of a start to it this morning already. A little cavity prep before squirting Frame Saver into the tubes later, and what should be followed, if all goes as planned, installation of HS & BB.
