This thread has made a little voice keep whispering in my ear that something isn't right here. I really don't care if someone wants to have a dork disk on their bike, they bought and paid for it, so that is none of my business. However I just looked at the Cannondale website and went through every CAAD 10 and CAAD 8 build level, not one of them comes with a disk on the rear wheel. No CAAD 10 or 8 at my LBS has a disk on it nor is one included in the box, the wheel had its cassette on already and it is on the bike. Is your dealer adding the disk at his insistence or your request? Just asking for my own edification, not going to flame or anything. I let you know how I felt a while ago so it isn't any big secret.

Bill

Is this what MTBers mean when they say they're moving to the Dork side?

So what did you decide to do? I don't believe it would be easy to add one later, I have never seen them stocked at any of my LBS or at Nashbar or Performance onlune either.

My most recent purchase (Bianchi Veloce (see links) - bought from LBS back in 2005) came with brakes set up as per UK (special request, and a nice job they did with the taping of the bars, thank you!). No "dork disk" thingy, either.

Aha, you noticed. You'll also notice that the CPSC-mandated reflectors also magically disappear. Even on the lowly CAAD2. Same as on the Trek web site, and the printed catalogs.

All my bikes are sans spoke protector, reflectors, and lawyer tabs. Don't try this at home if you know what's good for you. I do use lights when I ride after dark.

For historical perspective, the Raleigh catalogs of the early 70s didn't show disks on the Professionals and Internationals. And none of the road bikes had reflectors. They didn't have 'em, either. We used to attach roadside reflectors to our Pletscher racks.

When I worked in a bike shop years ago I did see a dork disc that fell apart and some of it got caught in the derailleur, destroying the derailleur and messing the wheel up. If you are not using a dork disc, or even if you are, you should build the rear wheel with the pulling spokes on the outside of the hub on the cassette side. This will make it much harder for the chain to get caught between the cassette and the spokes. If your wheels are built with the pulling spokes on the inside it is probably a good idea to keep the dork disc on until you get around to rebuilding the wheel.

A 4 page thread on dork discs! I don't think any bike I've had came with one, maybe 1983, or so.
I rarely see them on other club members bikes unless they were low or mid priced bikes bought "off the shelf".

I remember some of us were teasing a new guy about his dork disc a few years ago and he got pissed off.

My Sekine way back when, had one made out of steel, they cut the company name into it, and chromed it, so it looked nice, and that's the issue, the clear plastic ones, do discolour and crack. My Raleigh had one, when I got it, also metal, but in poor condition, so when I replaced the wheels, it got recycled. The Norco didn't have one when I got it, and it's stayed without....

If your bike came with one, leave it, when it gets beat up enough, you will probably need a new cassette anyway, so the shop can remove what is left of it.

I remove the disc and reflectors. Why? Because I can. If others leave them on that's fine with me because it isnt my bike.

It was my impression that, like wheel reflectors, dork disks come with virtually all bikes owing to liability issues, but that most owners of high end bikes remove them pretty much as soon as the bikes leave the shop. My last road bike came without one, but I have a suspicion that at this particular LBS, they know their clientele and don't put the disks and reflectors on the better bikes when the build them up in the first place.

I just got these beautiful original Weinmann wheels and I sure would hate for a chain to jump and mess up all my spokes. I think a metal protector also looks a lot better then a plastic one
