You commute enough and you get caught in the rain. You ride enough in the rain and you generate dust of aluminum and whatever they make brake pads out of. This morning I started hearing scraping noises when I braked on the Bianchi. This evening I found this. Can I keep riding on these pads? (Fortunately I had other calipers willing to give up theirs.)

That big piece of metallic looking stuff in the pad on the right looks a bit scary. I think that might be an internal structural element of the pad, that you've worn through to. They are trash in my opinion!
Oh wait, you were being sarcastic.
Good job changing them! I think I'll go look at mine. They are pretty bad sounding right now too.

You can put 'em back on, but I wouldn't recommend squeezing those brake levers.

I was at an automotive shop recently getting a slow leak fixed on a tire. I overheard a guy talking with the counter help. The service writer was telling him about how his brakes were all the way through the metal part of the pads and pushed the piston cup completely out, causing his master cylinder to lose all fluid. The guy was upset because it cost him a lot of money to fix. After he paid and left, the service writer mumbled under his breath, "Life is hard. It's harder when you're stupid.".... I laughed and he looked up and smiled at me. We both knew what he was referring to, and he knew at that moment I was in on his comment.

I just did mine. My hands were too dirty to photograph them, but geez, what fell from the sky the other day in Boston? Metal chips? Mine were awful too, but not down to metal. Yet.

Especially when the metal debris is "an internal structural element" of the pad. @scarlson was right, of course.

They may not cost a fortune but the time to install and adjust cost more than the pads.

What do you need those for anyway, Jim? Just drag your feet and wear out your shoes 😉. No metal there to grind down your rims!!!

Just call me Carrie
It must have fallen out in central Mass, too. I came home from a ride a week ago and my rear brake is making a ton of noise. Same thing--need new pads.

Hmm. The wheels, yes well, the wheels are Mavic MA40's (I think), dark gray ceramic. The brake tracks lost their ceramic coating a long time ago so they look like raw aluminum (or if you prefer, aluminiuiminum). Eventually I'll have to replace them before the walls get to thin!
I tried the Flintstones technique. Doesn't work so well going downhill. Going uphill however my bike can come to a stop all by itself.

Jim,
I had a similar incident earlier this fall, when I was driving my '95 truck home and cussing the driver in front of me for riding the brakes. I got home and checked the rt. front and sure enough it was MY pads burning. Two new calipers and pads for $200 and it was kinda good to go. But the mechanic and I found that all of the steering gear was worn completely out. So another $500 to repair that. I fully get the service writer quote, I used to be one in a dealership. I guess it drives home the need to lift the hood every now and again just to check on things. Smiles, MH
