The best state to ride in

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I love my home state, but I might give the nod to our fair neighbors to the north. Oregon has as much diversity of riding, and a fraction of the drivers.

Best state to ride in is...the one I'm in.

Currently in Indiana. Did a 30 mi. ride in the rain last night with a bunch of guys who meet up at a bike shop in Carmel, north of Indianapolis. Out of about 30 people, only a couple had Zipps. I was stunned.

Dude, don't be sorry, I'm born and raised here and have been riding in the city since i was a kid, riding heavily since i was a teenager. near death experiences all the time. I hate it. but deal with it.

I get sooooo envious when looking at those "empty road ahead" photos of all the various places around the country and world where people get to ride on a regular basis. i gotta put in an 80 mile round trip just to get a semi nice stretch of road on which to ride.

sad thing is... i've never done any road riding anywhere other than the NYC metro area (bergen, rockland, westchester, and long island included).

there are many things to love about this city, cycling is not one of them, unless you're an adrenaline junkie and love almost dying all the time.

Well, I've ridden a lot in California, and in NY, MI and Ohio - and 20 other states. NY is great, but not the variety of California. California is great, but I did not cycle anywhere that had the feeling of CNY finger lakes or the Adirondacks, and nowhere else I know of will you find a bike route as long as the Erie Canal. Michigan beaches are cozier than California's and there a many more organized tours there than most states I've seen. Ohio is my home state - I still love riding the east central hills and There's nothing quite like TOSRV. New England can't be beat in the fall if you avoid the traffic, and I loved being able to follow the river through Vermont on a hot July and dip into the water every once in a while.

In short there is no best but this thread could be useful for those wishing to explore new territory on a tour.

Take a train/bus/plane to Syracuse lots of great riding and empty roads, anywhere from the flat of the Erie Canal Towpath to very challenging hills. Finger lakes, Lake Ontario are within a day's ride and the Adirondacks and Thousand Islands not far beyond that.

States near Canada or Mexico, where it's easier to get the HGH.

Nothern New Mexico has some great riding, but I would probably give the nod to Colorado. I agree with the poster above that there is no "best" state for every aspect of bike riding. Some have better aspects than others.

Best state to ride in is either

A. Whichwever state you are currently riding in; or

B. Your "state of mind".
