Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The only analog watch I ever had was a Swatch like this.

I'm doing strictly bike related weights, because the upper body is nothing but wind drag, so why make it more so? Of course, as you do deads and squats, you actually do get some benefit overall.

My deal started in September, so this is more something you might look at as thing progress into next year. I say that, because weights will be mostly done for me as we enter February, simply because weights mess with the bike in such a negative manner, during this phase.

I started out at bar weight only, which is 45 pounds, at 60 reps. Deads, same weight at 40 reps. This is for form, and what's called acclimation. You'll determine that though 60 reps is a lot, it's a walk in the park to get out, though breathing will certainly be elevated. You won't pick weights up for a week after that, because you'll be incapable of walking, much less picking up a bar. You'll heal in a week, then the fun starts.

Squats, 3 sets of 20, adding 5 pounds a day. 1 set of deads, the same. You'll add weight, and you'll add sets. Soon, 5 sets of 20 around body weight, as far as squats go, but never crazy on deads, hanging in the one set groove there. Beginning of the year, stuff gets real. Way less reps, way more weight. There will always be a rest week after 3 weeks of this. You may do something along the lines of a set of 10 squats at 100, or something like that, just to keep the oil in the joints. On a Weds-ish.

The bike, low cadence, sweet spot type stuff. With the weights, it makes my cry, but nothing hurts like 4x2' with one minute rest. 2' at 125%. 4 sets of that. I breathe heavy, my legs are screaming, and the first set of intervals make me question why I do this. Believe it or not, your mind then settles into the fact that this is the life we're living for the next 40 minutes or so, and you're able to finish the next 3 sets of 4x2' Lucky I only have to do that once a week, though sometimes there's a mean streak, and I get tossed to the wolves on Sunday....

What your plan should be... Ride your bike, watch your diet, do as you're doing right now. There's a bit of commitment involved, and as your life and wee one get sorted, fitting this stuff in may be easier.

All I'm doing is deadlifts and squats with fairly low reps, longish rest between sets, and as much weight as I can safely manage. I may add some weighted lunges and 1-leg deadlifts later, if I get bored. I upped the leg emphasis in my gym routine this winter because I am slow, weak, skinny, 63 yo, and worried about my bone density.

LAJ and some other authorities advise combining weights with low-cadence sweet spot work. I have only been able to do that once, but hoo boy!

I like the Apple watch, simply because I can make phone calls on it. That's Maxwell Smart stuff, and that's cool.

Dick Tracy didn't drive a cool Sunbeam. I did lose a bit of respect for Agent 86 when the Karmann Ghia made an appearance, but gained a little back when the Opel showed its face.

Prognosis Negatory.
Tight tendons in the forearm. Light work. Extremely tight biceps insertion in the shoulder. Prognosis is one month. Fortunately I have other things to do. And I'm still off coffee. How does a 45 year heavy caffein addiction just go away?

We had a fantastic club ride today. Start temps were around 18 but slowly warmed up and was in the mid 20s within an hour. The sun was bright, the wind was calm, and the route had only a few small ice patches. We only had 6 riders but still 100% fun and way better than the trainer.

After my ride, I went out to lunch with mrs datlas and daughter #2 . I had a big ethical dilemma at lunch...

I noticed a few tables away from me, a well dressed woman in her late 40’s who had a modest but noticeable (to me at 15 foot distance) goiter (enlargement of thyroid). I looked again and noticed her eyes had lid lag (you could see whites of eyes between iris and upper lid at times. I highly suspect she has Graves’ disease or another thyroid condition. But not my place to say anything, right?

I thought of approaching her to say “sorry to bother you, but if you are not aware of it you should ask your doctor about your thyroid.”

I ultimately chose to stay silent on this as I did not want to creep her out.

Perhaps, "I'm a Doctor, and I have some unsolicited advice, which also happens to be free. Would you like to hear it, or would you like me to mind my own business?"

I went to pickbup my 12 spokes, this morning, and had a second look at the single rim they had for sale. $18. Seemed a fair price. And I was there and it was there. I bought an eight speed chain for the same reason. They're getting harder to find. Anyway, I got home and read the very fine print: "For use with V-brakes only". I'm gonna use it with caliper brakes. Will it asplode?

There is some elevation on the route, but not really anything extreme or long. But yeah these are supposedly dirt roads and rolling resistance is changed. Here's a chart: https://zwiftinsider.com/crr/ It's just overkill in my opinion. Even with the zwift gravel tire/wheel combo, rolling resistance is basically 4.5 times higher than road wheels on pavement. I just don't find the to equate with reality at all when I do gravel routes in real miles.

I notice stuff like this all the time. I almost always keep my mouth shut. Now if someone I am interacting with (waiter, cashier, etc) I am more likely to say something. But approaching a random stranger with a concern is a no-no unless I think it’s something really life-threatening.

Others can chime in, but I would guess the brake track specs are the same for calipers and V brakes.

I ended up doing some remote work at home stuff today because my youngest, the boy, has had a temperature and a nasty cough. I finally got over my pancake craving by making some at home because the boy loves them. I think it was just good enough to keep me away from the CB this weekend.
