Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I envy your weekly rides, in a way.

I usually ride by myself, and whenever I do ride with others I find myself painfully slow. I'm not competitive in any meaningful way, even with myself, so I never put in the effort to get any faster.

The last open to the public group ride I went on was a 30 mile gravel ride during which I was way off the back almost the whole time. The ride organizer kept hanging back occasionally, which I appreciated, but I could tell that I was holding him back from the ride with his buddies that he really wanted. It didn't help that I was underbiking a bit with 38mm tires on a 35lb touring/randonneuring bike with fenders and luggage. Perhaps a dedicated gravel bike would make things a bit better.

There is one club that does scheduled road rides through the spring and summer, but I haven't ever made it out to any of them, somewhat due to paragraph 2 above. At least I do have a true road bike that wouldn't be totally out of place.

Maybe this year.

Ah, much better. Decent little post-lunch ride. It would have been nice if the wind would have worked with me a little more, or if it hadn't been a factor at all, but it still felt good to exorcise the stir-crazies.

I encourage it. I am lucky in that my club has LOTS of group rides, some are fast, some are medium, and some are really quite sedate. I hope you can find a supportive group to ride with. It makes me feel safer on the road, plus it’s fun to talk bikes or life with others.

Angle of attack is different if the pads are not adjustable in that plane. The rim might have bit of a V profile to accommodate brakes that pivot below.

Even though you kicked me off the Addiction podium, Kudos.

If I kicked you off the podium, it's been a pretty damn lazy week for Addiction.

It’s the off season and it’s only Wednesday. But looks like I may not break 100 miles for the week based on work schedule. Sad!

I looked on the local club website. Looks like there is typically a Monday evening and then Saturday/Sunday morning rides that would be options for me. Slow/Med/Fast groups. Everything else from them is Tuesday/Thursday/Friday morning breakfast rides, when I'm at work. Sad!

Local-ish gravel ride is on Tuesday nights. Unfortunate thing is that they meet in a town about 45min away from me.

That's why things like that are referred to as "subway diagnoses" in clinical circles.

Do check it out. For a long time, I only rode alone and I enjoyed it. I still enjoy it, but there is a different, fun dynamic riding with others... when you're in the mood for it (I still feel free to skip out to ride alone with my thoughts, sometimes). You should be able to find a group of like-minded people that aren't looking for a hammer ride.

Swatch has some fun Bauhaus-inspired watches out right now - I'm tempted to grab one of those, too.

We’ve got two days of weather crap coming Thursday and Friday so my week will definitely not be a 100 unless I count fake miles.

Nope. It was back in high school. I think the two primary factors were: (1) it seemed "different," and (2) it cost less than some of the trendier ones

The Garmin 935 is the only one to persuade me to wear a watch. I still don't understand the Apple Watch - I'd rather just use the phone.
