Fox River Trail Carpentersville Il. First real ride on the new old Trek. It was more of a test run. It was 36 degrees. Too cold for a long ride but fun all the same. The bike performed flawlessly.

I rode in Johnston-Scituate-Glocester RI. It was in the high 40s-low 50s, gray and overcast.

Today I set out for a 45 mile ride but only managed 27 because my lyotard pedal's axle snapped mid-ride.




An older cyclist stopped to ask me if I was ok while I was waiting for a ride and when he saw my bike he said, "Wow! That's a classic!" Made me feel pretty good.

I think spring may be here. I saw this in my yard this morning.

JJS, bummer about the pedal. You covered for a new one? I just took a set of Lyotard pedals off my Peugeot because one of the front plates had loosen up from the swaged joint holding it to the side plate. (Installed a nice set of MKS Sylvan in their place.) I wasn't sure what to do with those pedals but perhaps you could use one, or the spindle at least.

We did 33.6mi on the tandem today. Most of the roads were dry, though they sure aren't now. Lots of bikes out today, riders saying "Nice day!" You know it's been a long winter when they say that and its 51 degrees, cloudy and threatening rain, and the road shoulders still have occasional snow banks.

Took the new gravel bike on its first trip west of the Mississippi, mainly road and path riding today. Stopped to take in Minnehaha Falls in Gomangoville. Also took a shot of the lock and dam while I was in that neighborhood. Only issue was that the one path by the river was still more skiable than rideable, so back up the steep hill I went to another path.

42 miles in all. Also, it was a test ride for a longer stem (the one pictured will be replaced with a polished aluminum one, but it was the right length so good for verifying before ordering). The Clement tires really don't do badly on road either. Some ice along other paths, but it's all slowly melting away.

We live one minute from the river.

We rode through the same area this morning, but zero time for pics.

I was too busy trying to catch the group.

I got in a little over my head today.

I had a similar experience when I came back up from the river bottom to catch the high (plowed) path to the falls. Just as I got to the top, two guys with nice DA equipped road bikes blew past while I was still gathering myself back from the short but steep climb. I kept with their pace for a while, but couldn't catch up with them. The cross bike does great up until about 20mph, but then it takes a lot to go faster. Oh well, I have a certain something taking shape in the basement that should have no trouble keeping pace. Just a few more bits to collect for that one.

It takes a lot for me to go even 20, and that's not on a cross bike. My hat's off to you if you can hit 20 on a cross bike!

Thanks, Tom. It's just our obligatory picnic. Heart Pond is a favorite local recreation site during warmer weather (whatever that is). Sharon says hi! Yeah, it's going to rain tomorrow. We have a show so I wouldn't be riding anyway, but I'll be loading PA gear in the rain.

We did hit 30.2mph today, but it was going downhill. Spent a lot of time on the small cog or the big ring, and a fair amount of time on both. Sharon likes to go fast.

I finished up my '83 Pinarello Record build this evening. It was getting dark so I only rode it 4 blocks to test it out. It is 39 degrees but looking for the 50s tomorrow so it will get more ride time.

You're lucky, Jim. Carol doesn't like to tandem at all, at least not yet. I have an occasional tandeming partner near High Falls. She has a tandem left over for her divorce, and she likes me to captain. It's nice, but she doesn't like to go fast, and the bike invites speed. The 53x13 or -- whatever it is -- is much too low for a top gear.

Is that second thumbnail a picture of Fort Snelling? It is a fun climb up the hill from the lower trail up to the fort. Do that a few times staying planted in the saddle and you get a good workout.

Payback time. Spring has sprung, and we're headed into the mid 40s centigrade this week. In the morning, when it's reasonably cool, the humidity is off the charts. Most of my miles will be on the trainer. Maybe I'll get in a night ride. Enjoy the springtime all.

Yep, that's the place. I had to climb back up since my planned route was still very snow covered. That climb is one that requires the little ring for sure.

Went out on my Prelude today for the first time since the upgrades. Fox River Trail Carpentersville Il. Superbe Pro shifting is super. It shifts like it knows I was going to shift before I hardly move the lever. Shifting happens so quick and silent that I thought it did not shift at all until I looked down at first. I got a few pictures but I was more interested in the ride. I snapped one of my LBS on the trail. It was a beautiful day to ride.

Took the Atala out for a final ride under the clunker 100 challenge rules. Although she rides beautifully that horrible gel saddle has got to go once I have passed 100 kilometers.

I took the wrong one: the bike path was being repaired, so I had a l'eroica experience, albeit a bit flatter:



The road back home was typical for the area: straight, flat and windy.
