Some punk destroyed my bolt on generator light w/pix.

A little down about some a**hole that tried to rip off my generator light yesterday. It looks like he tried to yank it; found it wouldn't come off, then ripped the wires that connect it to the generator hub. The front light is/was the bolt-on kind. He left the front cover on the floor. I also have a rear tail light that basically stays on when you ride and that doesn't work now.

What do you think? Is this something that can be easily repaired? I'm thinking about ditching the whole setup and going with a flashlight that I can put in my bag. It'd be something else to carry, though. Maybe even a lighter front wheel w/no generator. I already take off a blinkie when I leave the bike.

Man, that sucks. It seems that a person can't have anything nice unless they're willing to lock it up tight. What really gets me is that the jerk destroyed your equipment. If they stole it and used it themselves or sold it - it would still suck - but at least it would make sense. Why destroy it? What an a**hole!

I have a friend who had a similar experience. He had locked his bike up outside work and some jerks messed with it. They couldn't take anything - seat removed and carried inside, wheels locked to frame, locked to stop sign, etc - but they removed the quick release hubs from his wheels.

I don't understand vandalism.

That bites!

I've thought about doing a dynohub/light combo myself, but I am just a little too paranoid that what happened to you could possibly happen to me. I'll probably get a couple of flashlights, two chargers (home+work) and like 4 sets of batteries. All of that will probably be cheaper than a dyno wheel build...

I'd still opt for the dynohub, but I'd add a pitlock to it. At anywhere from ~$100 to ~$400 for the hub alone warrants it, in my mind at least. The plus side: never having to worry about batteries. The downside: a considerable upfront investment.

Hard to tell from the pics but if he just pulled out the wires or broke them somewhere it would be an easy fix. Do you have any sort of multimeter/electrical tools?

At least he/she didn't rip off the "made in china" and frame size stickers.

I recently purchased an Aurora AK-P7-5 flash light and bike clip from DX. I'm very pleased with it. It's small, light weight, with reasonable run time in Medium and Low modes. High mode is actually too bright when in traffic. It's also a good self defence tool. Here is a couple of photos of my P7 flash light set-up.

Sucks... while you're down there, it's time to remove the made in china sticker.

Sorry about your light. I have a dynohub, and it's great. I am trying to figure out what light to use with it, the Shimano I have is pretty mediocre. Also I want a dyno driven taillight

Here is a good place to start researching dyno powered headlights and tail lights.

Thanks for the words of support. Cooled off a little bit a few days removed. I'm pretty sure I can repair it. However, I will wrap some duct tape around it; uglify it a little bit. We'll see how that goes.

Supernova E3 asymmetrical headlight and Supernova wired taillight. Probably the best (IMO) combo you can go with.

I also have the supernova head and tail light and it's really nice.

Not particularly cheap though.

Do you have a source? aside from peter white, who has no asymmetrical beam supernovas (that I am aware of).

thanks

I like the setup, but what Keeps the light from falling out of the bike clip? It looks like it could slide forward and fall out.

You might try calling Sammamish Valley Cycles in Redmond, WA (my LBS) and seeing if Mark has any in stock.
If not there, then order it directly from the source: Supernova Lighting.

See that round knob under the clip in the first photo? That knob tightens the clip around the flashlight very securely. I did a few miles off road and the flashlight was held very securely the entire time.

Cool, I saw the knob but from the angle of the pic, it's hard to see how it's holding the light snugly in place.

I have a similar light, I just need to get a clip like that.

Depending on the light size, this bracket might work:

https://www.fenixlight.com/viewnproduct.asp?id=17

I don't have any experience with this model, just saw it recently when I was looking at Fenix's website.
