Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd get everything used. Bring a chain checker and visually inspect the cassette and crank teeth. Of course if you troll bonktown, you can get the whole group minus the chain (and cassette?) for about $700

when you say troll bonktown, do you mean their daily deals or frontpage? or do i have to scroll into their "components" section to find the deals?

he means click refresh like a mofo or sign up for the updates and hope you get there in time. They do crazy deals on stuff but most components from SRAM go quickly.

Cassettes, like condoms, should never be bought used.

If yo are moving from Shimano to SRAM, the only things you would need to swap out are the shifters, rear der., and front der. (some may say Shimano front der. would work or works better). Shimano brake calipers work fine with SRAM shift/brake levers, but some say they pull just tiny bit differently; so you can swap them out for SRAM, but definitely not necessary. All the above mentioned stuff you should be able to get them used in good condition. Others stuff you may already have, like crankset, cassette, chain, and cables, will work fine.

FWIW, I found the combination of Red shifters with Force derailleurs to be the best combo.
