This year’s tour was 30 miles shorter and included far too much pavement. It did end at one of the best taco places in Colorado following one of the best downhills in the state (40+ miles without much pedaling), however.

About 3000 feet. If someone hadn’t built a reservoir over the old railroad, I could have added another 30 to 35 miles of coasting to the ride and about another 3000 feet of drop.

Neat, about 1000m then. I'm sure I've dropped that much in the Pyrenees way back when, and I know on other trips there have been many times losing a good chunk of change of attitude. Certainly part of the fun of mountain riding, although it usually involves payback at some point.

Yes, yes, there is payback...or would it be pay forward. Hagerman Pass is just a squidge shy of 12,000 feet. There was about 5 miles of tough riding and not a small amount of pushing. The 4 miles from the top of the pass to the old rail bed is rough, rugged and slow but once on the old bed, it's fast and fun...until the reservoir.

Just finished turning this rescue back into a genuine touring bike. In the taller frames I'm afraid the triple butted tubing is a bit too flexible for my loaded tours but I'll give it a chance to replace my aluminum stiffy. The nostalgia is very strong with this one.

I should have posted this photo a month or so ago but, I drag my feet. Being inspired by this subform, the folks over in C&V and a friend of mine, I decided to go for a trip on the GAP. That happened back in August and the report is at GAP trip. Posts 1 thru 32 are the preamble and post 33 and beyond is the trip report and follow up. I 'run whatcha brung" which was my 1987 Schwinn Voyageur. This is pretty much what it looked like before I stuck it in the car for there drive to Cumberland, MD. With all the luggage, spares, food, etc this lump weighed in at 70 lbs = 57 lbs of bike n stuff and 13lbs of food and water. But it ran great.

It's a 2016 Surly Disc Trucker with 26x2 tires. extra water bottles mounted on either side of the head tube, 19 watt soloar panel, etc. I just finished 3 weeks Las Vegas - Furnace Creek - Badwater Basin (Death Valley) - Shoshone - Baker, CA - Mojve N.P - Amboy - Twentynine Palms - Joshua Tree - Lake Havasau City - Parker, AZ - Prescott AZ - Flagstaff.

First overnight credit card tour
Rode from the western suburbs of Chicago out to Oregon, Illinois where I spent the night at a hotel before riding back today. ~90 miles each way. Got very lucky with the weather as I had tailwinds yesterday as I was trying to stay ahead of the rain (I succeeded!). Then the winds shifted after all the rain last night so I had tailwinds on the return trip as well as abundant sunshine. What a great weekend to get away!
The only thing I forgot to pack was the charging cable for my Garmin 310XT watch. Total weight for fully dressed rider and fully packed bike is 227 pounds. I accelerate like a freight train

Holy---rohlof, B17, nice bikepacking setup, shallow depth of field/wide open, poggies, lovely reflection of chain and rotors, framing and general camera work, magicy hour and vignetting---Batman!
cool shots. Must have been fun as heck riding around there.
careful of on the pump, the circular donutty bit can loosen and you'll loose it and the flippable adapter rubber schraeder/presta doohicky, so check it once in a while being out in the open like that (have luckily had it only happen when in a small pannier, and found the bits after)
hey, your call on the free rights site, I dunno, I'm old school and it rubs me the wrong way, and as a music friend of mine once said, "sure, it gives you exposure, but you can die of exposure...."
Not an easy answer I know, and I'm not really in this anymore, so easy for me to say.....
