Picked up this beauty in September and have decided it's a keeper. Julie and Marc at Marinoni identified it as a1980. Plan is to do a full Resto but do not have infinite $. Keeping Miche headset. Cinelli drop and Benotto stem. Going to use Flamme Red Label tubulars I think but also have a Wolber rear/Mavic front and also a pair of Nisi tubulars.

Paint - Stay same colour or go to a metallic blue? I prefer the blue but also want to repaint with cost savings in mind. Thoughts?

Where to paint - what would you do?
1. Local powder coat place for about 200 but worried about prep and rust with powder coat.
2. Cachet Bicycle Company is local and hoping they might paint it so I don't have to ship it and save dollars.
3. Ship to Marinoni is ideal but $$$

Build Options:
1. I have an era appropriate 600 Arabesque groupset ready to go.
2. Slightly anachronistic mix of mostly 600 Tri color and other 600.
3. Build slowly with Campagnolo. ready have crank, pedals and brake calipers.

Lots of options and I have lots of time to read since I just had ankle reconstruction surgery. Go ahead and lend your thoughts.

Don't worry about the paint, build it up with tri-color, and ride the heck out of it when your ankle is better.

You could see if stripping it yourself would mitigate some of the cost for Marinoni to do it. There looks like there is enough rust to make this somewhat urgent for the long run, once you build it up you may not want to tear it back down, especially after you start riding it.

As per thinktubes suggestion, I get it, this is still a remarkable bike as is. But, I have a lot of other bikes I can ride the hell out of including a 14 pound carbon rocket and an awesome gravel bike. I agree with Merziac that this is a vintage beauty and an example of Canadian cycling history. I definitely want to make sure it is done right so I can stare at it on the wall as well as ride it. Any thoughts on groupset? From what I have read the Arabesque is as good as same period Nuovo Record for the most part. You seem to have some sound principles around bicycle restoration. Share your opinion. My feelings shouldn't be hurt because of the pain killers.

The foundation here is my key concern, it's a great one to have so I am advocating mainly for the best resto you can muster, the rest will be elevated by that. Again, rust is always a concern on old frames and should never go unchecked regardless of how bad when it is showing IMO, where there's smoke, there's fire.......

Groups are tough for me, Campy is well, Campy. That being said, I don't go there willingly all the time but it is where you go for the best bang ,just not always for the buck,it is expected by many.

The Arabesque is good stuff and has many fans so it would be a good choice. You should consider modern also, nothing cooler than a vintage bike being able to hang with the modern crap, er stuff et all.

I think you're off to a good start asking plenty of questions, sounds like you have plenty of skin in the game so you have a good feel for the drill, engage.

Thanks. Yeah I have 10 speed Dura Ace that could be used but cold setting is not in my bag of tricks.

Marinoni could do that too, just spitballin, not really encouraging it.

I saw this when it was on Kijiji but it was just too far from me.

Lovely bike, I'd send it to Marinoni for a paint job, probably silver would look best.

Marinoni’s paint is very high quality and his repaint costs are quite reasonable. I’m amazed how my ‘87’s original paint over full chrome (not the best substrate) is holding up. And many Marinoni owners here will agree that the bikes ride great.

Where are you located? (Most of us include that in the information under the avatar.) If you’re not in Canada, I can appreciate that shipping costs going back and forth across the border would really add to that cost.

As @merziac notes, the rust visible in your closeups indicates that a full strip, prime and repaint are needed to keep that frame going for a long time. The BB cable guides area is hard to really clean up with that rust, so someone that really understands older frames like this one would be valuable. Maybe @gugie or @Andy_K with the excellent powdercoaters that they use could give you some ideas who to use.

As to components, I’m always of the opinion that you should use what will make you most enjoy this beauty.

It is 60cm. It was dumb luck. I was in Peterborough watching my kid play basketball then afterward took her for a tour of the university. I picked this up in between as I had been scrolling kijiji while I was there. There was also a pair of Ambrosio 19 Elites available through another fella but he didn't answer the message I sent him in time.

1 color with painted on decals is about 350$ CAN

Near North Bay ON. I will have to figure all this stuff out in time. My niece attends McGill so maybe I can convince my sister to drop off in Terrebonne for me. As it seems like Marinoni repaint seems to be consensus. Hopefully they will leave those red maple leafs in place.

They will keep the red maple leaf if you want. They will do anything you want frame wise (added water bottle holder/ spread the frame at 130mm...) or any kind of paint scheme

They will do anything you want for far less and excel at it far more than most, always have, probably always will.

When you bring in frames have you prepped them or is that included in the 350? I have chemically stripped paint from frames before. I found it to be a long process with chemicals I used. Any ideas for quick strip? I have used CLR for surface rust which works really well. My biggest concern is bottom bracket area, specifically bottom of the BB shell where it looks like rust might be spreading under paint. If I can save $$ by prepping myself then I will because I will have some time on my hands for the next 6-8 weeks but not on my feet.

No need to prep
To give you an idea on pricing:
Brought a Rossin frame with stuck seat post. No fork with the frame
Got a too short Rossin fork
Took out seat seatpost/ replaced steerer tube on the fork/spread the rear at 130/aligned the frame / aligned dropouts an derailleur hanger/ paint witn painted decals/ installed bb
350$ CAN

The trick is to show up with the frame while Pepe is there
Talk with him
He sets the price. Otherwise you pay regular price
He got a Pacemaker and has slowed down work/ he is pissed because it might interfere with his next attempt at setting a new hour record
