(I actually feel angry with the author of this ad, so rather than rant...)
And so I'll rant.

The "front rack" appears to be a rear rack cobbled onto the front.

Yes, the frame is severely bent from a front end collision, and the rear chain stays may be too?

But the kicker is I don't think it's a Super Sport, unless they sported the oval headbadge at some point in their run? The headtube seems to feature filet brazing, but it's noticeably absent everywhere else. I think it's a redecaled Continental or Varsity. The handlebars are steel. The downtube cable stop is wrong for a Super Sport. The seat post is super skinny. The seat stays are not positioned like any Super Sport I've seen, and are not bullet points.

But yeah, the rug and the bike are purple overload; I hadn't even noticed.

You're right, $400-500 is high. But it would be easy to buy for 50, sell the brooks for 75, grips for 25, arabesque gruppo for 100. That's 200 right there. $10-20 ea for wheels, fluted seatpost, frame/fork, or drop them all off at the coop

That Schwinn is a varsity straight from the 60's. The old Huret parts are worth more than the bike, frame is damaged, and not much left to work with. A 60 year old bike isn't going to bring much in the market. JMHO, MH

If u want need a road bike and do not have a lot of money this one as a straight solid very lightweight frame. I looked it over carefully. It is in good shape. Bike Needs wheels, that's about 20 each. It has realer' I took off to check it. Raler is in well working condition.
Getting back to what is needed pedals crank gear get that online for under 20 an a good one to. Wish I could keep this bike my self. I am down sizing my bikes I was thinking of keeping this one cause it is much lighter then my Montgomery but that one I have been on many marathons with such as the ms Valero bike to the beach.
When I got that bike it needed a total overhaul it coast me bout 375.00 to get my Montgomery on the road again. It was a rust bucket when I got her. I am asking $70.00 for the road champ. Thk u for yr intrest if I don't get back right away I will soon
P.s. I will tweak it upon purchase & if u like an do have tires tubes what ever else I will put on free of charge if u like. I enjoy wrenching on bikes thx

A BIKE? I already have five of those.

If I were in the area I think that I would grab this just out of curiosity. If you examine the pics closely you can see forged dropouts, and chrome peeking through the wrap at the seatpost and the fork crown. It also appears to be a SR stem. Perhaps this is an upper mid-level Centurion or similar Japanese bike?

This is an actual ad on the Walmart (Canada) website

Vittoria Zaffiro Pro Tech III Fold Bike Tire, Black, 700x23c

$$630.83 is the listed price.

I emailed Walmart but no reply.

A little cheaper elsewhere at other retailers....
(Hint - Cheaper everywhere else!!)

I still don't understand how the value of these bikes was/is determined. Frame is nothing special, components are nothing special, tech is old-school - and the admission price is $3500?

Poseur value. Never underestimate how much some (MANY) people are willing to spend on how they want to be seen. Every Chevy rebadged as a Cadillac that GM has shipped in the last 50+ years embodies it. This.... thing.... just does so in an especially garish way.

I saw this one too. I just assumed it was because it had "L'Eroica" in the name. Seems like putting L'Eroica in the title of your ad is an instant way to justify asking no less than 150% more than market value.
