Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Friday: Just a short ride before sunset - 29 miles, 1,014'.

I ran into a pretty gnarly headwind/crosswind up on the ridge, which made descending (with 50mm aero wheels) a little, um, interesting. So, I stopped to take some pictures! We've had snow twice now, so I expect that those pretty leaves will be gone soon.

Haven't done a ride report for a long time here. Health issues kept me off the bike and not bothering with taking photos while rebuilding cycling strength until now.
I rode from the city to Mt. Lofty today with the Sakae. If I ride up here again next Sunday I think I'll take the roadbike, this bikes harder work long distance climbing due to the weight. It's not all bad though, nothing descends through winding bends like the Sakae

My pre ride energy boost, a Broccoli smoothie, yummy

Good to see you back, jbchybridrider, and the Lofty climb brings back some great memories for me.

65 miles and a tad over 2k climb. Mostly up going out so thought coming back would be a leisurely ride. Then the wind kicked up. Fought it all the way home.

Sunday: Totally wimped out on a gravel event. It was 30F at go time, and would have been a total 70 miles, including to/from. I took my inability to find suitable gloves (they're somewhere deep in the bottom of a drawer) as a sign.

Instead, I met up with a friend later in the afternoon and did a pleasant local route in a balmy, sunny 50F for 21.3 miles, 1,047'.
I also went grocery shopping (4.6 miles RT).

Busted my butt at the spin class Wednesday, & still not totally recovered on Saturday so the semi-planned ride didn't happen.

Sunday, 56, 3k loop to a reunion picnic of the local climbing gym that closed 10 years ago.

Fast for me, & PR on the opening 350' climb that I've done many many times.

This puts me in 5900th place out of 17,000 on Strava.

Nice weather continues

Alllllmost back to normal after months of recovery from a shoulder injury, followed by a thyroid problem (unrelated, just an inconvenient coincidence, got surgery coming up to get rid of the stupid thing). Spent most of the summer on the indoor trainer, which seemed to help. Didn't really lose any conditioning, which surprised me because the trainer doesn't really emulate climbs as well as I'd hoped.

25 miles Saturday on the familiar rural training route, set one of my fastest times despite headwinds after struggling the weekend before on that same route.

And 35 miles on a casual group ride with friends Sunday, 'cuz my legs were too dead for anything more strenuous.

That may have been my first back to back riding weekend since I was clobbered by a car back in the spring. Very encouraging after what seemed like an interminable recovery period.

Kind of had a rough weekend cycling. Someone pressed the dumb button and I encountered lots of stupidity while riding. Short list...wrong way cyclist, pedestrians walking right out in the intersection against the light, several close passed at high speeds from cars, almost right hooked at least three times, almost left hooked at least once and a mega large group of roadies who decided to pass really close and lap wheels even though I asked them to give me some space. Anyways, Saturday rode to St. Petersburg for 47 miles. Sunday did my Thonotosassa lake route for 44 miles. The good news the weather has finally changed. Sunday it was in the low 70's with low humidity. This next weekend should be really nice.
