Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've got a century planned tomorrow (though my friend's has backed out of rides a time or three, now) and the forecast is making me wish that I hadn't waffled on packable jacket. Going to be mid-40s when we roll out, low-60s for a high - I'm thinking that the extra coverage would have been nice, but I guess I'll have to make due with base/jersey/vest, arm warmers, bibs, and toe covers.

Layers are the king. I do have a jacket, but it's really just a wind breaker, with no lining at all. Arm warmers under it with a vest, is good for temps in the 30's. A short sleeve base, jersey, non insulated vest, and a wind jacket, are really my go to, and it gives me more than enough pockets to stow as I shed stuff. Of course, your humidity throws that whole thing out the window... Dry cold, you know.

I expect you will be fine. I hope your friend does not weasel out this time.

I think that I'll be fine one top... but now I'm wondering about whether or not to wear thermal knickers. It's been so long since I've worn them that I can't remember if they'll be comfortable in the low 60s. I suppose that it'll be low effort, so maybe that'll work.

It would be a disappointment, but he's still made some nice progress this year, so I'm proud of him for those steps, regardless. That being said, I do have alternative family plans, if it comes to that.

My ride tomorrow is a century but only 100K. Must get home in time to head out and see the lame duck Phillies.

I'm a knicker fan. You'll likely be OK in thermal or non. Just don't let them dq you for sock length.

I was surprised that our team knickers look like bib shorts with leg warmers. I have no clue how other teams do it, but I guess it works.

Guy rolled a clincher off his rear wheel and crashed on this a.m.'s ride. He was fine, but very scary. I started getting cold, made my apologies and took off, thinking they'd catch me in a few miles. I stopped after 10 mi and waited, but I was faster than I thought, plus there was another mechanical. I soloed the rest of the way home.

Ouch. Glad he was ok. We had a large group of around 15 which tested my nerves a few times. Two flats. Still all good.

Didn’t even know that could happen. Looked like a very light and soft tire. Big, muscular, rider too. I was a little behind, as usual, and only saw the immediate aftermath.
