domane clearance
so I've been experimenting with bigger tires on my '12 domane 4.5
it comes with 25s, but my Vittoria Randonneur 28s fit just lovely front and back.
then tonight I thought I would take a risk and put a Schwalbe Winter 30 on the front. (note: this is not the Winter Marathon, just the Winter. yes, it has studs).
and looky here. it fits!

I'm actually really surprised to see that. How is the rear clearance? Stock rims? I think I saw a shot of someone putting some "big" 28's on it and that seemed really tight. I think I'd be pretty scared to rock studded tires that close to my carbon frame and fork.
I've got a 5.9 myself and have considered fenders for the "rainy season" and/or day to day commuting, but haven't gotten around to messing with it, yet.

i left the 28 on the back, and it is just fine. seems tighter in back than front. don't know whether the studs would work in back, but mostly I worry about the front for ice.
the rim is from a CAAD8 but I imagine my stock rims would be fine.
I used to run fenders but they just didn't fit with 25s. had to put a 24 on the back. still got lots of pebbles rubbing in between tire and fender. not much for riding in the rain anyway.
next i will try a Michelin Jet Cyclocross

I want to put some 28s on my 4.0c when I pay it off.
I am 6'2 and 265lbs so the wider tires will help on a few fronts.

30c Michelin cross tire will be here on Friday and I can certainly try that on the street. just don't want to dislodge any of the precious studs on the Schwalbe Winter

just finished trying. it was okayish up until 20-40psi, but at the 60-80 inflation it was rubbing on the fork.
oh well. I'll start looking for 30c road tires...the cross tire seemed to have a lot of extra tread and little things sticking out of it (I'm sure there's a name for them!)

I was looking at the Schwalbe Marathon 28c for the rear and a Conti GP4000 for the front,when the originals Bontrager R1s wear out.

I tried a Marathon 700x28 on my 2014 5.2. It barely cleared the brake caliper on the rear. I tried this to be able to ride gravel, dirt and crushed stone roads and trails. It seemed to work until just a tiny little pebble got caught between the tire & brake. And that was on a dry surface. I'm sure it would be almost unrideable on a wet surface when dirt, sand, small sticks etc. would likely stick to the tire.

the rear is much tighter on my 4.5 - a Vittoria Randonneur (sp?) Cross fits nicely but I don't think I could go any higher.
I tried a 32c Continental tour Plus but it was narrower than the Vittoria! (or at least indistinguishable) Conti needs to get a new ruler. took that puppy back.
two more tires on the way this week: Schwalbe Marathon Racer and Kenda Kwick, both 30s.

I'm thinkin' ~someone~ should sell his Domane and buy a Boone 5... It comes stock with 700x32c tires, no clearance issues, and the IsoSpeed decoupler so you wouldn't miss the Domane much and can run fat tires all day long!

Absolutely. I bought my Domane thinking it could pull double duty after crashing a commuter spec cross bike. But now I don't even want to jack with fenders on the domane and think I might end up buying a Crocket frame for commuting and dedicated gravel rides. The Domane is a good commuter option, but it's so pretty and light and I will miss my fenders and dynamo light setup from the old bike.

Yup... that's what I did. My Domane 5.2 is a dedicated road machine... too pretty to booger-it-up with all sorts of accessories. I also have a Trek ION (pre-Crocket) that is my trail bike. Quite frankly, if I could only have one bike, it'd be the ION because it can go just about anywhere and is very comfy with the Bontrager CX0 700x34mm tires. It's not quite as fast as my Domane, but then again, I don't race so "fast" is all in my head anyway. My wife has a Crocket and I like it as well... especially because it has internally routed cables which my ION doesn't.

I have run 32 on the front, 28 rear, Bontrager R2s. The rear doesn't look like it will handle much bigger.

I am. It could just be that Hutchison wants you to use their system/accessories. No issues, 750+ miles.
