Good cycling climbs in the US?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tramway Road out of Palm Springs will get your full attention.

My backyard rural climb route west of Eugene- with Butler Rd. at the heart of it- is pastoral bordering on epic and gorgeous, and has some pleasingly steep & deep stuff. Climbers in this area, look me up, I'll suffer wit choo.

Was wondering when someone would mention this. I have done it west to east during fully-loaded tours. Stayed at Colonial Creek Campground the night before. Terrific ride. The first time I got rained on then snowed on going over Rainy and Washington Passes.

Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park is arguably one of the most scenic roads in the country. The west slope is the coolest, but not if you are afraid of heights. In places there is nothing but a little stone wall separating you from death by gravity.

The climb up to Crater Lake (I preferred the route up from Diamond Lake) and then the ride around the lake will test you.

Auefderhide Highway from Oakridge, OR is gorgeous. Gentle until the last few miles.

And, of course, McKenzie Pass. West to east is harder. The scene at the top is almost eerie. That Skeletor would fell right at home in that lava rock observatory.

I did that CO, although the GF and I passed on Mt. Ashland on the rest day. Dead Indian was relentless. I remember reaching the top and noticing a lot of loopy people, myself included.

I've been stressing to everyone in the family that we need to go to Maui for the big family vacation next year so I can ride up Haleakala again but this time with my brother-in-law. It really is spectacular when you take it all into account. It's been two years since our honeymoon and I remember it like yesterday. There is nothing like descending for an hour and a half.
