Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you have a few minutes, this is a fascinating piece written by a woman who loved touring and decided to try leading bike tours:https://www.outsideonline.com/240723...-job-nightmare

One of the things I found interesting is that my first and only unsupported, group tour, which also happened to be my first ever tour, had a couple of the same personalities: the alcoholic (who was also a bigot) and the work shirker. Fortunately, neither of them were as extreme as the people she encountered. During the trip I wondered if I might like leading tours. After the ninety-three day trip was over I started riding home from Maine. I realized pretty quickly that solo was the way for me.

If they had S in stock, I would have considered one but for those snooty European brands I generally do better with M anyway.

Working on employee evals, one of my least favorite parts of this job. The mediocre ones have often have ridiculous expectations and there's often not much that can be done for the most deserving.

Speaking of apparel sizing, the fam and I were at a Vineyard Vines (preppy, nautical clothing) yesterday and the wife held up a shirt, "I found this - thought you might like it."

"Uh, sure... maybe if it were two sizes smaller."

"I thought you were a Large?!"

"I am, but not in Oversized American."

The thing was huge. Velo Vol 's flappy jersey huge.

We're back but have an unexpected houseguest, so I'm a bit limited. When do you guys leave? Going to be in town this coming weekend?

If not, I may be taking tomorrow off and could meet up for a ride in the early afternoon?

Also for those of you into auto racing (@LAJ) and also cycling, check out the new GCN vid with Tony Kanaan, Indy 500 winner and also super-strong cyclist-

Got goosebumps seeing his helmet collection at the end. Quite the fleet of Treks he has as well, definitely fitter than his 44 years would suggest.

This is one of those days that makes winter insufferable. It’s cloudy dark, 30°, and 20 mph winds. Going to have to head for the rec room for some Wahoo action which really isn’t too bad but I’d still rather be on the road

Too bad you didn't buy that place in Florida.

We leave Friday morning. Unfortunately, tomorrow is the one day this week that the wife is working remotely, so I'm in charge of the kids 'til 3pm or so. She wants my help with making some kind of NYE family dinner after that.

Wed is probably my only open day at this point; Thurs will probably be prep for the trip back.

:-/

We do have Wed off, but my bike team buddies are having a brunch gathering, tbd if I can work that AND a bike ride into my day. Seems like you've had your fill of VA miles anyway!

If you can, cool. If not, no worries. I'll be back.

I was really looking forward to a couple days off the bike, but just went ******g stir-crazy today. If you can't do Wed, I was thinking about starting early and doing the Cap up to Richmond and back. Looks like it'd be about 46 miles to Great Shiplock, or whatever.

I allowed myself a few minutes to check out cycling options in Cape Town, SA for our trip in September... good god, that place looks like paradise. You can rent some pretty nifty bikes for under $40/day with delivery and pick up at your hotel/airbnb, and look at those roads... Going to be tough to remember that it's not a trip just for me but for wifey too, and she ain't a cyclist. She does like to sleep in, though...
