So do flat bars+bar ends make an actually better climber? In other words, would it make sense to put such set up, if I where to build a bike meant purely for road climbing?

Weeell ... kind of an odd question? Better than what ... ? Why would you want a bicycle "purely for road climbing"? Do you not ride on the flat, or do descents?
Anyway ... assuming one has a "flat-bar" bike, then yes ... the combination of flat-bars + bar ends does make for increased efficiency when climbing out of the saddle.
Quite simple, really: more bio-mechanically efficient than trying to climb out of the saddle 'on the grips' (or 'tops' on a drop-bar bike); parallel to using the 'hoods' on a bike with drop bars.
Examples above; here's another (mine):

I don't pop over here often anymore, but I liked this thread. I thought it was fine in the Road Forum.

My pictures, first shows the bars and saddle to bar drop (when it was a 2x9 with the more Aero wheels). Second picture shows current build, 1x9, with a more touring oriented wheel. The shadows in the 2nd photo make the bars look really goofy, hence the inclusion of the first pic.

Great looking bike. Nicely put together. What was the original frame?

Here's my 2013 Trek 7.7 FX.

It has the identical frame to the Madone 3.1:

I've been thinking of building one of these flat-bar road bikes from a very-slightly used late-'80s Schwinn Tempo frame I have laying around that is a little too small for me (56 as I ride a 58cm) as a road bike but should fit fine as a set-up like this. At my age (over fifty) I don't really care about "getting into the drops" and I rarely use them, anyway. This thread is inspiring me to do just that.

I always like the idea of a flat bar road bike. Velo Orange imports some bars for just that purpose.

The Postino has no rise.

The Milano has a little more rise. Both would look good on a vintage bike IMO.

I've got a set of short straight bars on a 1989 Rockhopper comp. They look cool but really get your wrists uncomfortable after a short time. I've always wanted to try something like the VO style bars.

*ROFL* This is the funniest thread I've read on these forums. None other has made me laugh so much. I haven't seen this many bunched up panties since reading the general mayhem political forums.

Hopefully you're talking about the roadies who followed it over here just to complain. Really who cares if you take a road bike and put flat bars on it.

Drools...! Did those handlebars come as standard? I asked about getting bar ends for my FX, but I was told they weren't compatible with the handlebars.

Pang,
How did you manage to get bar ends on with the IsoZone handle bars?
Best regards

Thanks. It has had many different incarnations, and typically ends up being my go to ride if the weather looks at all off, if I just want to enjoy myself, and I want to be comfy for long miles.

How do you like those handlebars? Do you have certain times when you'd reach for the middle vs. the ends? It looks like the middle grabs might be tough on the upper body if ridden too long?

Well mine is at the other end of the spectrum. Old style 21 speed road bike about as cheap as you can get and still be at an LBS. The brakes were awful so I switched them out. I also don't enjoy riding in the drops so I fitted a flat bar with integrated pods for indexed shifting. You could as why, and the answer would be it makes it much better for its intended purpose - fair weather commuting.

Switched out the grips for a better color match a few weeks back and installed dual pivot brakes at the back. I tried to do the same in the front but the frame is setup for bolt ons and the set I got was for recessed. The v brake levers make for a bit of a mismatch, but I got the cable tension to a point where the brakes work well enough to keep me happy.
