Stronglight 49, 93 & 99 Polished Cranks

Those model 49, 93 and 99 Stronglight cranks came that way new from the factory.

Because they were not anodized, the surface of the aluminum can corrode fairly deep which makes polishing a lot of work.

In cranks or any other bike component with an uneven gray corroded surface, it's probably easiest to start with some "wet or dry" silicon carbide sanding paper like that used in auto body shops. For really bad corrosion, start with 120 or 240 grit and then go up to finer grits from there. Use with water for faster cutting action.

Once you get under the corrosion you can switch to maroon or light gray Scotch Brite, steel wool or what have you then follow up with metal polish. I like SemiChrome for this.

You can polish the parts on a buffing wheel but you can easily remove too much material.

BTW, steel wool is about 38 to 48 Rockwell C hardness. The chrome on a plated surface is about 80 Rockwell C. The surface of anodized aluminum is over 93 Rockwell hardness (usually at a depth of .001" to .005").

The good news is it is my size and it came with a number of perks including a Simplex seat post (anyone know what kind this is?), a drillium version of a Stronglight 49D crankset, Zeus pedals, gold anodized Mafac brake calipers, and a few other tidbits of interest. I also got it for $50.00. I will soak the frame and a few other parts in a rust bath. I tried to use nail polish to remove some of the spray paint to no effect. I have some stronger acetone at work I will try and if that doesn't work I will have to come up with some other plan for the finish. It could be I will turn this into some kind of a commuter.

I bought the bike for this crankset and it will shine up nicely.

I love these!

Anyone know what kind of Simplex seat post this is?

You know you are in for it when the freewheel looks like this!
Do we have the same model?? https://imgur.com/gallery/D2FRFFq

Very impressive restoration so far!

I just picked up an example of Chas.'s admonition, "A fully painted frame that should have chrome plating, especially on the 'socks' - the lower parts of the forks and stays - is frequently an indicator that the chrome was rusted." This was an N+1 frameset/project I didn't really need (second Capo Sieger), but I low-balled the seller, and he surprised me by accepting my offer. This originally had half-chrome forks and stays and chromed head lugs. Since the repaint is pretty decent, I plan simply to add decals and have my wife (a talented artist) paint the small head lug cutouts red to match the rest of the head tube, per the original. I debated painting the originally chromed areas silver, but that often looks tacky, so I think I'll pass. My other Sieger has its chrome and original components, so this one will be a resto-mod, anyway, with 1980 Stronglight cranks, cartridge BB, 1970s SunTour barcons, 1973 Brooks Pro saddle, aluminum (Campag.?) seatpost, rest TBD.

Update: I used an oil-based gold metallic sharpie paint pen to line the lugs. Came out a bit wide but otherwise I’m happy with it. I also cleaned, reassembled and reinstalled the Mafac 2000 calipers. Mafac brake levers got pulled off another PX10 of mine. Shimano bar end shifters were also added. Velocals will be here in a couple days then I need to get some wheels and a saddle. Resisting the urge to steal. A Brooks Pro off another of my bikes.

Looking good, is the head badge going back on?

I kind like those 70s chunky Peugeot badges that looks like the buttons on a vintage cigarette vending machines, the kind that was in the lobby of every restaurant back in they day before we wised up, thankfully, about second hand smoke.

Yes the badge is going back on. I need to find two reasonably screws for that or consider glueing it in place. It previously had two pretty ugly large screws holding it in place.

Your brake levers need to slide considerably forward on the hooks. Maybe align the bottom of the drops co-linear with the bottom of the lever handles?

Ha! yes. I just slid them on the bars. I haven't set them into place yet.

I still don't like the matte black but I have to say you did a pretty amazing job with the paint. The lug lining and decals are very well-done.

Holy cr@p! That thing is turning out gorgeous. Nice save, nice work. Your photodocumentation should provide encouragement and reassurance to anyone who finds a rustbucket with a good pedigree. (Oh wait ... I resemble that remark. )

I cold set the rear stays and found a way to install (without butchering the dropouts) and get working a modernish 10 speed rear derailleur along with a 8 speed cassette.

I pulled off a Brooks saddle from another bike in the shed and ran the cables today. It’s likely I’ll finish in the next couple days. Couple test rides and tweaking. It’s a smooth ride. Bar tape when I’m feeling lucky.
