If you only have one bike, there are trays that do not block the tail lights or plates at all if that is your concern. I just posted one.

I REALLY like my Kuat, but a word of warning about it and likely many of the others.

At the time I bought my Kuat there were only a small number of key combo for the lock, perhaps even just one. I assembled them for a store and never needed another key after the first time. I highly suggest swapping the key lock part of the hitch lock and the cable lock mechanism.

It's a reminder to them.

BTW.. I never said all.

And I did say when you have multiple bikes, inside is not an option, see post #23 .

By this point, many people would've shrugged and acknowledged that other people have different needs and preferences - maybe even different vehicles.

Or, were you just making that up too?
I never specified what type of rack. You're making up that I did.

You answered: "Inside is the safest. I've seen too many frames marked up."

Again - How did you determine that all of those carbon frames, that you allegedly saw at the start of the rides that you allegedly rode to, had been marked up by hitch racks?
Because they were taken off of rear bike carriers and the top tubes and sides had scratch marks from being in contact with the rack and other bikes on the rack.

That is an issue. But, the small cables on most of those racks are only a short-term deterrent. I don't rely on it except for short times in reasonably safe places.

Fully agree, and not that people really care (as multiple videos online readily point out) but it would look far less suspicious just unlocking it and moving it to your waiting vehicle (etc.) than cutting the cable.

True, but the odds of a common thief having a Kuat lock key when you stop in the gas station, convenience store, or coffee stop is pretty unlikely.

I wouldn't leave the bike on the rack in a hotel parking lot overnight or in a shopping center lot while gone for an hour or two, but for the 5-10 minute stop the cable lock should be okay in most circumstances. It's a detterent, not security.

The location and spacing of the marks.

It's not rocket science... or maybe it is.

if you don’t pay attention to how you are loadihg a hanging rack, you can scratch the bikes.

If you don’t pay attention to how you stick your bike in your car, you can damage the interior.

OK, got it.

I care more about the bike than the car. I tend to keep cars past 250,000 miles. It's gonna get scratched and marked up over the next 15+ years.

I you prefer a torn headliner to a scratch on a bike, I am pretty sure you are in the minority on that one.

But the my point was that you can just watch what you are doing and not damage either.

Pretty hard to tear the headliner.

As I read GlennR’s numerous responses, I’m reminded why you shouldn’t wrestle with a pig....

Conclusion - the best rack for carbon frames is the one you like that secures the bike without touching the frame.

What if you have deep carbon wheels?

Just asking...

If you are serious, you are plumbing new depths of ignorance.

You claim to know sooo much about hitch-mounted racks, but you apparently haven't the first clue how they actually work.

Easy answer - put it on a platform rack. The rear tire strap can be padded so as not to mar the rim. There is no clamping force on that wheel, so there is no risk of structural damage to the rim from putting it on the rack. The contact point on the front is the tire, so again no risk of damage to the rim.

I strongly recommend look at some videos of the 1up USA rack. I have one on order after researching hitch mounts extensively and examining friends rack. Light, easy/ quick to load and unload bike, doesn’t touch frame, doesn’t stick out far when bike is loaded, folds up very close to bumper when not loaded, list goes on. The con $425. But worth it for all the above reasons and avoidance of a marred frame.
