Looking to borrow a 1-1/8" headtube reamer (EC34) that I can use on my VAR headset facer/reamer (with a 16mm shaft) to finish the Raleigh Blasptwenty ("Vader") build.

I also have a limited assortment of new Park facers (in the wax) that I would be willing to trade (but only those that I have duplicates of).

Turns out the one I have (in the pic above) is for facing 1-1/4" headtubes. I don't mind obscure stuff, but I do mind when it's obscure stuff that doesn't help me ).

I'd be open to a loan of an entire tool if a C&V'er is willing and if no contemporary facers fit the VAR tool.

Will do the job and ship back ASAP too.

-Kurt

WTT: 175 tandem crankset for 170 or 165 tandem crankset

I have two 175 tandem cranksets and they're both too long for me. Both are 110-74. One's a TA Zephyr (this will have a 58 bolt circle as well as the 74, allowing a 20t granny), and one's a Specialized (S logo, not flag logo). I need something shorter. 170 or even 165. I'd do partial trades, trades involving both of my cranksets for one of yours, anything's negotiable. Anything decent quality 110-74, or TA cyclotouriste/pro 5v, or Stronglight 49D, even a "racing" 130. Whatever ya got. Someone must have one moldering away in their basement just waiting for this.

Thanks!

What generation crankset? The last ones were pretty much identical to Sprint, maybe even Superbe Pro. 109 mm spindle methinks.

I'll have to check the crankarms to see if there's a number there that'll identify when t hey were made.

Thanks and cheers

My 175 tandem cranks for your shorter

Here are some pictures of the aforementioned tandem cranksets I would like to trade for shorter ones. I just can't keep riding 175s, my knees won't let me, so I need to trade these for something shorter. The TA Zephyrs and the Specialized cranks both have the ability to run a 20t little ring. The Specialized because it has an Avid Microdaptor and the Zephyr because it has the dual inner bolt circle.

John,
It is a ZEUS. Looking at it from ten feet away the bolt on outer rings gave me the impression that it might be a TA. In removing it to send to Natterberry, I found my ancient ATD wrench was the only one that would bring the tight fitting 16 mm bolts out of the arms. Every other socket I have was too thick to get between the arm and the bolt. Smiles, MH

I have the same paint scheme on what I have deciphered to be a 1971 Raleigh Competition. It does indeed have Zeus cranks.

It was interesting to me that the Competition was in the Raleigh brochures in 1969, removed for 1970, 1971 and 1972 and then returned in 1973 as the MkII. My understanding was that these were built by Carlton and it appears that they continued making them - even though they didn't seem to be in the brochures.

I hang my head in shame. I have had mine for at least a couple of years now. I did do a bit or research on the bike, and as of now, I have only rode it around the block once. (I had to steal a wheel-set off another bike to get that ride in) I will get to it ....maybe now is the time as we are in hibernation...

I just picked up an old Zeus frame that had been mostly stripped but still had the crankset on it. I assumed that was because whoever stripped it down couldn't get those bolts out. I bought it mostly for the cranks and bars so I hope I'll be able to find a wrench that works.

Iowegian,
If you can get your hands on a low dollar socket in 16 mm, you can grind the outer walls of the socket down to a thinner wall profile. It will take a bit of work, but I have done stuff like this before where there is little clearance. If you can get the arms off, I have replacement sets of bolts and washers that use a 13 mm wrench, they cost $4 per set, and work quite nicely. Saves a lot of frustration, and replaces bolts for most designs of spindle. Thread pitch is 8 mm X 1 mm. Pics below: MH ...

Stronglight chainring swap?

Does anyone have a 46-tooth (or better yet, 47-tooth) Model 93-style 122 BCD chainring they'd consider exchanging with me? I have the pictured-below NOS factory-drillium ring in the same size and BCD that would be used on a 93, but would look a little odd. I'm pretty sure this version was styled for the Model 104 and/or Model 105.

If this wasn't NOS, I would probably go ahead and just install this on my project, style be damned. But it seems kind of a shame to plunder its NOSness on a utilitarian project when someone else around here might put it to more worthy use.

I will add that this ring is totally pristine--it came to me in its original plastic bag and has done nothing more stressful than hang on a nail since I unwrapped it a few weeks ago. Those little droplets on the surface in the photo are melted snowflakes from my photo session on the porch. It's snowing hard here right now, with a couple of inches on the ground already. "Jeezum crow," as we say in Vermont.

[Edit: Darn, can't get the photo to attach. I can email it to anyone who wants to see it, though.]

You'll really enjoy it. I was able to acquire a 1971 Competition in the other short-lived color combination about 3 years back from Gordo-Trek. Mine actually came with Zeus Competicion dropouts.

Here's how you get those chainring bolts apart.

Get a drill bit just the same or slightly smaller size than the slot on the back-side of the nut.
Mount the workpiece on a drill press and carefully drill a hole, centred in the slot, though the NUT (edit - I had mistakenly typed "bolt") and through the crank arm BUT NOT into the bolt. Measure and use a depth-stop.
Remove the crank, reverse the drill bit and stick the shank into the hole - through the nut into the crank arm. The nut is now locked to the crank arm and you can use all necessary force on the hex-key in the bolt-socket.
