The Breaking Away Masi Bike
I'm guessing fans of the movie have seen lots of pictures of the Masi used in the film and some of the replicas that are out there. I thought I had seen them all. Then stumbled on some great pics on flickr while searching for pictures of racing shirts from the movie. The images are some of the best I've seen and highest resolution. But let's talk the bikes. There were three right? The one pictured has been shown before but not so close up and in daylight. You can really see how pastel the color is. This is has the yellow Brev. Masi on the stays. Has anyone ever seen the original Blue Brev. Masi bike? I don't think I have. Who has that one? As it appears Dennis Christopher owns the one pictured. Were Dave's two shirts custom made? Would love to find either of them- the blue yellow or green black red. And a good morning to all

I lived in Bloomington during filming in 1978 and watched a couple of scenes being shot.
This is not a replica Masi. Looks like it might be yellow (???) on the chainstay. Just before Dennis Christopher - I mean Dave Stoller - picked up the fallen notebook and gave chase to the Vespa.

Cool pictures (saved) One of the bikes from the Cinzano truck scene (close-ups), had the blue decals. Have never seen that one on display.

Gary Fisher and I had dinner with Dennis Christopher. He was more impressed with us than we were with him, because he said he was just an actor who portrayed a bicyclist, while we were REAL bicyclists with bicycling accomplishments.
I got to ask him how many takes were required for him to scoop the notebook off the ground. He said he did it first time, in the rehearsal for the scene, but the director kept the cameras rolling and they used it.

The bike on top of the car, in Dave's room and the book-pickup scene was the Blue Brev. stays version with I believe sloping fork crown. The yellow Brev. had the flat crown which is the one we've all seen in exhibition pictures.
Where's the blue one? D'Ohhh!!!

Looking at the picture of Dennis sitting on the ground next to the bike, I asked myself, "Are there cleats on those shoes?" Anyone know if he had cleats on the shoes he used in the film?

Some variety of Detto Pietro shoes, it would seem.

Not about the bike, but the real Dave Stollar was a guest of honor at the 2016 Eroica CA. The bike was there too, but I walked right by it, without getting a picture. There was so much vintage eye candy there, I guess I kind of OD'd and missed getting the Masi's picture. Here's Dennis Christopher in the yellow shoes on the starting line. Sorry, that's all I got. He looked pretty comfy with his hot coffee, as we rolled out in a morning drizzle. Good times!

One of my high school teachers had gone to Europe in the late 60s & had a Masi made for him.
He bummed around until it was ready, then rode it touring Europe.
His pride & joy.

I am just revisiting this thread. Those were Detto's and if you look closely they didn't have the cleats attached. He struggled with cleats so they filmed without them. Gary on the other hand did use them. I will have to go through my archives but I may even have a set of those left. Smiles, MH

Jan,
The quarry was first cabled off with warning signs and no trespass signs. But after a death there they filled it in. The ones north of town on the west side have been filled as well. I-69 went right over one, so it was filled and covered with pavement. There are still remnants of the quarry as the blocks were piled up and can still be seen from the highway. Smiles, MH

Not about the bike, but my brother got me this Jersey/cap combo for Christmas. Its not a true replica, but at least is a remembrance of a fun movie. As junior racers back in the day, "Breaking Away" was one of our favorites. We "were" Dave Stollar back then. In fact, my brother's name is Dave.

It was nice to see Dennis at Eroica a few years ago and he actually kept the bike from the movie but admits he never rides it. It was on display and he brought it up on stage when we were there to watch the movie.

Dennis is from my home town of Philadelphia. Wonder if he ever gave up smoking.
