Hello, boys. I'm baaaAAAack . . .
Hello, folks. Haven't posted since 2013, when I sort of drifted away from cycling. I got fat, diabetic, hypertensive, and lazy, and then last summer decided it was time to do something about it. Since last July I've lost 44 pounds, ridden about 1400 miles, and gotten back into a healthier lifestyle. I'm still slow, weak, and pathetic, but not quite as slow, weak and pathetic as I was. Anything new around here?

I'm new. Or at least my join date puts me newer. All in all, probably the same type stuff being argued about as was years before you got here. Like you, some people drift away and are replaced by other SOB's like me.
I went through a brief hiatus cycling too but luckily it was more because work was keeping me too busy. It's took some effort to get back in the habit.

Not proud of that! I'm posting to see if anyone still remembers me from way back when. I was a regular on the forum from about 2005 to perhaps 2012, mostly in the 50+ forum. Somehow, all my old posts are gone and I'm considered a Newbie once again. (Wish I could have a Newbie body to go with that!)…
Anyway, if anyone remembers me, give me a holler! .

50+ the way that it used to be [from 4-26-16]
50+ used to be like the bar on "Cheers". There was a cast of characters like the Deege and Denver who had distinct personalities. Topics were generally related to bicycling or ageing but not always. It was it's own place.
Some people didn't like that. They said they felt like they had wandered into a bar where they didn't belong. Their solution was to change the bar and they did.
Know what? 50+ is coming back. The nay-sayers have drifted away and 50+ is everso slowly returning to the way that it used to be. I like that.
I still miss Denver and the Deege.

What has captivated me most about Fifty-Plus beside the general milieu are (were) the Annual rides begun in 2010 up though last year [2016]. I have ridden in five of them,and have compiled the personal narratives of all the Rides on the thread,"A Chronicle of the 50+ Annual Rides"
I myself think this so-called "way it used to be" ended with the Fourth Annual Ride in Tennessee [2012]. BTW, billydonn was on that one.
Another change IMO is the seeming disappearance of self-identified females from those good old days. Miss Kenton, Miss Jean, and Beverly come immediately to mind as the Women of Fifty-Plus, since I have met them all in person.

Nothing important.
Since you left I kept falling off and breaking stuff so Mrs. Grouch and my kids have restricted me to riding a recumbent trike. That's about it.

Wouldnt it be nice if we knew just how good we could get? That way, we’d know there’s no reason to try to get better - we should just accept that we are slow, weak and pathetic, and no reason to expect more. But unfortunately in this sport, you can always get better. And there’s alway someone better than you. That’s the eternal frustration of cycling.

DnverFox = I haven't seen a post in years. I hope he and his family are well.
RetroGrouch (as he replied above) moved to the recumbent full time. He's so close to 30k posts, that i'll predict he rides easily surpassing 40 then 50,000 posts.
No idea on Allegheny.
What makes me laugh at times, is the number of guys on other BF forums who are well over 50+ that NEVER post over here. I wonder if they lurk? Or are they truly committing to cycling's "fountains of youth".

Thanks, jppe. I feel about 1,000% better physically after losing 44 pounds. I've gotten about 1700 miles since I started cycling again last August - that plus eating right will really make the pounds fall off, even at our age. Last time around I think I got to into it. I started missing other events to go cycling and it imply took up too much time. And I went too far the other way. My goal is find a sustainable middle ground.

I just turned 50 last January. So I'm also "official" now but have posted here and there in this thread before that.Kurt, any day on the bike is a good one. Congrats on whipping thyself into a better shape. Keep the tires down and the cadence up.
