Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd like to try some of these japanese genki drinks. I hear they've got nicotene, along with god knows what else. Besides, if they're good enough for the Terminator, they're good enough for me

I thought those were the same thing as Red Bull? I read this article about the guy who started red bull and he was visiting the orient and saw all of the cabbies drinking that stuff. At least I think it was the same stuff and renamed and sold it here as Red Bull. I want to say I read it in Smithonian.

"Energy" drink can be anything. Do you mean a little boost from something caffeinated or something that replaces electrolytes during exercise? There's a big difference.

Like the height/weight thread a couple days ago, I would venture to guess there's a big age split between those who go for "energy" drinks (younger crowd) and those who opt for electrolyte replacement (older folk).

For riding, I'm just Gatorade and water w/ PowerGels for longer rides. I'm a regular coffee drinker. So much so I got an espresso machine, because it would save my money from Starbucks. You can't beat an Americano or a double shot espresso for a quick pick me up. Cheaper than boutique "energy" drinks by orders of magnitude too.

Bawls Guarana (Guaranexx in the morning to cut back on the sugar) and Elements (Fire, Meteor, Venom and Metal). But I don't drink any of these if I'm going for a bike ride, those are reserved for when I'm working/studying.

On the bike I mostly drink water and gatorade.

For work: bawls and water joe (caffeinated water).

for play: gatorade, frappucino, water, or "california style" sunny D...it's thinner than the regular stuff, so less orange loogies.

Dude, does your accelerade have a layer of crap on top? Even if I mix it weak, mix it into hot water and let the water cool, I still get a layer of undigestable garbage on top.

Coca-cola - it's the real thing! I used to have a can of Coke and some toast before every morning ride. It was really refreshing! Then I o.d.'d on about a litre of Coke before a long ride and kinda bonked at the top of a climb. Since then it's been water and toast. I save the Coke for breakfast, along with a small bag of pretzels [I used to eat Cool Ranch Doritos with my Coke, but they have trans fat - not good for you].

For a good kick just before a ride I like to add a bit of everclear to my Cope. Gets the blood flowing nicely

Seriously, I do not use an energy drink just an endurance mix by EAS. If I did not get enough sleep the night before I may take some RedLine from VPX to kick start my engine and that will keep me going for a good 5hrs without the jitters or the big crash when it wears off.

You should try EAS Endurathon or VPX Hydroforce. Both mix nicely without the crap on top. Just be sure to mix it about 30min before riding to let the foam dissipate.

I don't think they are the same thing. Japander.com used to have a little explanation about the stuff, but it looks as if they've taken most of that info down. From what I remember, this drink was mostly marketed to the japanese 'salary man'. One of the key ingredients was nicotene, so I don't think that redbull was fully derived from that. Another point that makes me think otherwise is the size of the bottle. Redbull and all of its clones are good, but you would need more than what those little bottles have to offer to do anything.
(ps, is it any wonder that the japanese have a word that means 'death from overwork'?)
