Too much BS for him to deal with, to return IMO. Fantastic rider, but the questions will ALWAYS loom, dont think he wants any of that.

always enjoyed the 'humanity' ullrich brought to racing. he frequently looked like he had actually 'died a thousand deaths' unlike his main adversary. he had bad days like everyone but more often than not, he was among the top handful of finishers on the tough mountain stages. we all know he was among the best tt's during his decade or so on the tour.
felt he never had a dedicated, 100% shot for a 2nd tdf win with the various incarnations of the deutche telekom teams with zabel's perennial quest (and success) for the green jersey. they were great teams but seemed like they were burning the candle at both ends-every stage-pursuing both the green and yellow jerseys. i think we all saw what kind of champion jan was in 2003 riding with team bianchi riding solely for him. if telekom had ridden solely for jan during the late 90's/early 00's, armstrong may very well have fewer tdf victories in his palmares and ulle may have had more. will always be one of my all time faves.
