Savannah to Charleston Century?

So, we were planning a century down to Key West, but forgetting about Fantasy Fest cancelled that! So, we have changed our sites to utilize the weekend we have all arranged time off for.

Do any Georgia/SC people have input about this route?

I can't zoom in close enough with Satellite to look for shoulders, whatever. We cycle in Broward/South Florida, so traffic isn't such a concern. I'm more concerned with speed limits, local attitudes, and suicidal bridges. A no-shoulder two lane bridge with a speed limit of 60mph would obviously not be very desirable.

Has anyone cycled this? Part of this? Can you offer any insight?

Thanks!

There is road construction on SC 170 in Bluffton, SC And on US 17 for 22 miles in Beaufort and Collenton Counties. US 17 out of Savannah is a heavily traveled two lane road, not to mention bikes are prohibited on the Talmedge Bridge.

If you are to cycle this route, do it on a Sunday.

This confirms what I've heard about Hwy 17, thanks. We're going to do a loop out of Charleston instead, it looks like there are several established, mapped century rides that aren't nearly as death-defying.

Good choice. I hate to drive that, much less ride it.
