Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My freshly waxed chain is hanging up and coolin' down. My thoughts on the process - the initial cleaning of the chain is far and away the most significant effort; the actual waxing is trivial. Since the cleaning only has to happen once per chain, the rest of the year should be smooth sailing... if it all works as advertised. Fingers crossed. Hopefully I'll get in a ride tomorrow and see how it does on the road.

I'm using Maxxis Rekon 27.5 x 2.8 and they are about 825 grams. When I rode a 26er I could get tires under 600 grams.

I'm on Kenda Havoks, weighing in at 860 grams.

I still have a couple of 26ers in regular use. Conti Race Kings are nice at 420 grams, and for ultra weight weenie gravel/cx action, the amazing Kenda Klimax which got as light as 330 grams, but you don't really see them anymore.

Agree about the initial cleaning. Don’t get it dirty.

My understanding is that it won't need another solvent-based cleaning even if I ride through the muckity muck. Stuff doesn't stick to the nearly the same degree as oil/grease - most just pop the chain back straight back in to the wax pool or, if needed, run some boiling water over it before dunking; I can dispense that from my espresso machine on any given morning.

Did you flash cool it in water? One video that I watched said that was critical. I tried wax many years ago and was really unhappy with the mess after getting caught in a rainstorm and haven’t tried since. Thinking that I might do it for fun, again.

Taco Bell and food do not belong in the same sentence. Just because you can consume it doesnt make it food.

No, but I've seen that video - looks like a huge, messy pain in the ass. That guy, Cycling Oz, has shifted his process since - he recommended the cold water dunk when he was mixing paraffin wax and paraffin oil. Now he's using wax and PTFE, much like Molten Speed Wax (BTW, I found out yesterday that MSW is based in my metro area - cool). Anyway, Oz now recommends wiping with a clean shop rag right out of the bath. MSW recommends just letting it drip and cool, which is what I've done. It doesn't look like there's that much wax on the outside, so I don't think that it'll get caked, but we'll see.

Got in so early this morning I had to use my card to get up to our otherwise unsecured floor. Anti-slacking.

I wasn't happy giving up that hour of sleep the other night, but I'll admit to seeing some benefit - my wife and I are at least getting some temporary relief from our daughter's Circadian clock. She's usually up with the sun, and she was starting to walking in to our bedroom before 7am pretty regularly. Having her sleep past 8:00 this morning is wonderful - it's giving me a little more time to get stuff sorted for (knock on wood) a ride a little later.
