What is this old Ross mini chopper/muscle bike?

Hi all,
I found this in a thrift store yesterday & have never seen anything like it! I bought it for only $12.95 and have tried tied to find it but have had no luck - can anyone tell me what I have?
Thanks

That's pretty cool. Looks like it's from 70s or early 80s. It's a bit of a sting ray knock off.

I can’t make out what it says on the top tube, but I don’t think it’s Tom Kellogg.

P.S.: Non-essential stores in Miami Beach have been closed since the 19th. How were you able to find a thrift store open?

Looks like a copy of a Raleigh Chipper made with more traditional frame.

From a glance online, the Ross similar to that one is the Apollo. So maybe the OP’s bike would be a Mercury?

It looks like an early pre-bmx specific framed bike. We called them MX (motocross) bikes and built them from Schwinn Stingray frames. Seems like there were a lot of those "funny bikes". Ross made the Apollo which was straight bars. My buddy Dave had a Sears Screamer that was similar. It had several speeds and huge butterfly handlebars. It would have made a better boat anchor than a rideable bike.

"Steel Frame" on the top tube. Still trying to figure out what's on the chainguard.
