Success

I have a 98 Cannondale R1000 CAD3 with Ultegra 600 groupo set. It has over 50k mikes, never serviced the bottom bracket, never needed to. I love the bike and decided to upgrade the components to Ultegra 8000, got a great price. Anyway today I pulled the crank arms off, referenced this post to verify if the spanner cap should be removed. The 8mm bolt turned freely both ways. I backed it out counter clockwise easily. Amazing, both arms came off no problem. The bottom bracket bearings feel dry but intact. Thanks for all the info!

Yet another resurrected zombie thread. LOL

I have a number of Shimano cranksets with their One Key Release system and I have yet to see one that takes an EIGHT mm hex key. All mine are 6mm hex sockets.

Cheers

Well, as long as this thread is back, Shimano's 9-speed Ultegra FC-6500 "Octalink" cranks came with a one-key release that did indeed use an 8 mm hex key. I believe the contemporary Dura Ace did too but I only owned the Ultegra version.

My Shimano one-key-release cranksets re 2 Dura Ace AX, 3 or 4 600EX including 1 600 Arabesque, plus a number of Deore ones. All those have 6mm hex socket bolts. I guess the 8mm socket bolts came out a fair bit later.

Cheers
