West Shore Road in Oyster Bay?!

i heard that they re-did West Shore Road in Oyster Bay recently, and that it's not good for riding on now when going out to the Bayville Beach area. is this true?! only asking cause i know it used to be tight before, and while riding north on it was ok for the last decade or so, riding south on it to get back into town was pretty dangerous in certain spots. i haven't ridden out there in at least 5 years or so, and i heard somewhere that it got repaved last year, but i also heard that the way they did it is not good for roadies. any truth to that, or is it still ok to ride on?!

They built a sidewalk (that should have been a bike lane) about 3/4 of the way from Beekman Beach to the end of W. Shore, but the road improvements themselves have not made the road any better or worse for cycling than it ever was, in my opinion. I don't think that was ever the intention.

It's tight, so be prepared to "take the lane" at times.

The SOUTHBOUND side is Much, much better than before. Those annoying hedges have been cut down.

Please pardon me for taking two weeks to reply to this... I have photos of West Shore Road

Just keep in mind, once you choose which side of the guardrail you want to be on, you're stuck there, you can't climb over the guardrail too easy (Northbound)...

Bayville - Oyster Bay "Boardwalk" by AviationMetalSmith, on Flickr

There is only ONE gap in the guardrail, and it is at the long spindly fishing pier.

This photo shows where the HEDGEROW has been completely destroyed, you have room to roll onto the grass if you wish now:
