Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best ventilated helmets

I have been looking for a new bean protector (Giro-Savant). However, I have read in different reviews that the helmet was hot. I live in Houston and it is very hot and humid most of the year. I am looking for something that is well ventilated....any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about "best", but I like the ventilation of my Specialized Prevail:

https://www.specialized.com/us/en/117060

I also made sure to go with white so it's cooler under the sun.

Found this to be a great deal -- lightweight and very well ventilated.

FWIW, It's what a $200 helmet gets you. that a $45 one won't. Engineered airflow with out reducing the Impact absorption..

check out Catlike bike helmets

Sale Here: https://www.competitivecyclist.com/ca...NhdDEwMDQwNQ==

I din't live in Houston to have tested it for you.. you will have seen the Pros Wearing them this year..

I like my Catlike, also my Bell. The more vents, the higher the cost. Coolness always costs.

I'm on my second savant and 4 Midwest summers of use between them. I don't find it hot at all. The first one cracked after a nasty crashed, I walked away with only my ego bruised and some road rash. My head was fine.

I bought a Savant MIPS this summer, I don't find it any hotter than any other road helmet I've used.

As one Houstonian to another, any helmet you buy that has 20 or more vents will be reasonably comfortable. And don't discount the value of a Headsweats sweat scarf/cap. They strongly promote evaporation of sweat and that has a powerful cooling effect. The loss of air contact with the hair and scalp is well worth it. I used to really suffer from stinging sweat in my eyes all summer on rides over 15 miles. With Headsweats Inhave no drippage and the cap finishes completely dry. It is a miracle.

If you opt for a Headsweats, be sure to size your helmet large enough to account for it.

I have a POC Octal Mips - really like it. I swear it's cooler than no helmet at all.

I'm in Houston, too. I tried a Headsweats cap and it was awful. Made my head hotter, didn't stop my sweat. Then I tried a Halo headband and that helped a lot.

I'm also looking for a well ventilated helmet now.

I looked on the website and saw headbands and skull caps. Have you tried the skull cap or just the headband?

I tried the Headsweats cap, which was bad. Then I tried the Halo band, which was good.

Sorry I was unclear. Halo has a skull cap. I am interested to know if you tried their product. I am void of hair and would like the cap to keep away the interesting sun tan/burns I get after a long ride.

right now i use a 2016 POC Octal and it's BY FAR the most ventilated helmet i've ever used. my last helmet before the POC was a 2014 Cannondale Cypher, and it doesn't even compare to the POC...

I use the Headsweats Shorty to help with my follically challenged skull; also, I think it makes helmets more comfortable to wear. I will note that Headsweats seems to now also have a "super duty" version of these, which I'm not a fan of. I think they're too thick, so the old classic shorty is the way to go IMO.

Another vote for the POC Octal - you won't find a better-ventilated helmet, which is why practically everyone in Phoenix has one.

It's funny, I just got a new helmet yesterday, Bell Gage MIPS (which is very light @ 266 grams and well ventilated, 50% off!), which specifically warns in the user manual to NOT wear anything underneath the helmet. I don't recall seeing any such warning with helmets I've owned in the past, which makes me wonder if doing so interferes with the MIPS system.

I didn't realize this but I'll put that down as a reason not to go with MIPS.

I just sent an email to Bell to get some clarification on this point. I have a feeling this might just be some CYA-type wording, but we'll see.

I use the 12 in one product, from Amazon, under my helmet. I also need to protect my bald pate. I've found that if I roll it up tightly at the forehead, it works like a halo. No sweat gets into my glasses. I use a cheap Giro helmet, and with these liners, I feel like my head is air conditioned.
