3/4 length tights - half full or half empty?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

3/4 length tights - half full or half empty?

Is there a use for these or better to just go straight to full tights? I understand leg warmers are another alternative solution but I've not tried those yet either.

Great for early fall mornings and evenings. Don't have to muck with leg warmers that won't stay up

I love them. I have the warm ones and the pure Lycra. Assos Lycra ones are my favorite but I cannot find them anymore. All I can find are the warmed brushed-on-the-inside ones. I wear them more than anything, except in the winter when I moved to the 3/4 and full tights with brushed insides.

Don't forget knee warmers -- you'll have them all eventually.

That said, I love knickers. But for long rides with large temperature swings, warmers give you options for tearing stuff off when it gets too warm.

I have a pair of PI knee warmers. Never had a problem with them staying up, I put them on first, then the bibs, the bibs I guess help hold them in place. The length on them combined with the shorts make them 3/4 length tights plus I like 4 inch socks so I end up with like 3 inches of exposed skin.

I think they work great, but I also live in Florida. They get worn in Jan/Feb on 35-40 degree mornings with a light wind jacket. The jacket gets tucked in my Jersey pocket 30 minutes into the ride.

I've got

-- full length tights for cold weather.

-- 3/4 tights for spring/autumn weather.

-- full length leg warmers for those occasions where I'm not sure what it is going to be like out there.

-- 3/4 knee warmers for warm days that might start and end a little cool.

My Hammer (voler) knee warmers go pretty far up my leg so they dont fall down. i wear those until it is 50ish then the tights come out. normal non padded tights so i can wear them multiple times with normal bibs underneath

Great for late summer early mornings. Difference between them and full tights is only 10 inches or so, it makes a big difference when it's a bit cooler on those mornings. If and when it does warm up during the ride I don't find that they get much hotter than regular shorts. Best of both worlds.

I like them a lot in the winter. A lot. The insulated ones are the difference between riding and not, they're that good. YMMV.

I assume we are talking about knickers. I like the concept because I find them to be versatile. I've only had one pair of PIs and the chamois is terrible. Looking for an alternative if anyone has suggestions. I have and love Assos bibs but not sure I can afford their knickers.

Primal wear makes a great pair of knickers. Good chamois and they don't bunch up below the knee. They retail over $100, but I found some on Amazon a year ago for around $50.

Personally never felt the need. If chilly I find keeping the upper half warm is more important and will go with arm warmer long sleeve or wind breaker with shirts and hold off on full length tights till 50s and below.

what's up with all this talk about cold weather gear? Is it already "winter is coming" where you are?

Some cold weather gear is on sale now. Voler has some sizing clearance samples right now AAMOF.

Unless you're fond of paying full retail.

I like mountain baggies and long socks. The baggies drift over the knee and with the long socks everything is basically covered. The baggies also have the extra thicker layer that acts as a windbreaker for the upper legs.

Agree. What's the point of knickers versus tights? I've never suffered from overheated shins while wearing tights.

If you're curious enough, you'll buy a pair and try them out.

I will go to knee warmers when the temps start falling. It's often cool at the start of a ride but warm enough to shed the warmers later.

When temps will stay cool enough, I break out the knickers and wool socks. The few inches of shin that are exposed help regulate my temp. without me feeling uncomfortable.

Later, it's full tights time.

Depending upon your climate and your tolerance of cold, you may love knickers or never see a need for them. Where I live, there is a time frame where my knickers are useful, at least for me.

As always, your mileage may vary (YMMV).

for me, it's the double layer of shorts and tights that keeps the upper legs warmer. That's why i go for knee warmers vs knickers. more versatility and i get to wear the shorts I like all year long. when it gets below 50 I want double layer

Me too. Here winter is typically 40s to 50s, so cool but not cold. At those temps a l/s jersey and knickers usually does the trick.

A little warmer and I'll just go with bibs and knee warmers; a little colder and I'll put full length tights over bibs. It's good to have options.

These are good- on sale as newer model has different chamois.

Can't beat the price- I got a 2nd pair.
