Shimano r7000, 105, and shifter end ferrules

I'm upgrading my old bike with a variety of Shimano r7000 105 bits picked up new or used. The shifters were a good bargain as a pair

Looking at online installation videos it seems the gear cables into the rear of the shifter has a ferrule with a tongue.

The shifters came with no ferrules.

I bought a Shimano road brake cable set, and a gear cable set. Neither of these come with any ferrules with tongues.

Sooooo - do I actually need a tonged ferrule for the gear cable at the shifter end?

Or
Can I just use whatever ferrule from the cable pack looks like "fitting" the best ?

If I need a tonged ferrule, how do I find out which one(s) I need?

Many thanks!!

It sort of depends on the model of cables you have. Look at the DM's (dealer manuals) for your model of DR and they will have some specific statements scattered about them that might answer your question.

https://si.shimano.com/#/

https://si.shimano.com/api/publish/s...001-04-ENG.pdf

There might be some other DM's that give better guidance on this.

Thanks, the set I have is just called Shimano Road Shift Cable Set, with selections of standard length ferrules.

It is OTSP41 outer, and actually I have just found a Shimano note somewhere that the r7000 rd has to have a small section of OTRS900 as well due to stiffness/radius into the red.

I did find the DM for r700 brake caliper installation which has a section on Shifter cable installation and shows the tonged ferrules as well.

This is becoming a bit of a headache, just when I thought I had sorted out the whole groupset!

This https://si.shimano.com/api/publish/s...R01-03-ENG.pdf Go to page 30 for the shift cable. The ferrule stuff is confusing, for sure.

I'm usually wrong on these things so lets find out. Someone will ding me when I am!

I think the tongue mainly helps with keeping dirt out of the cable housing. You can likely use those cables. It might just be that you won't get as long a life out of them. But nothing about not having the tongue will ruin your DR's or other components.

So if it otherwise fits, and you can't return it for a full refund, then use it.

Well, guess I need to do this right really. My last groupset,Tiagra 4500, lasted 10 years

This 105 r7000 needs a good start to last that long. I've managed to track down some Dura Ace cable sets which seem to be the right thing for both gear and brake.

Many thanks folk, appreciated!

The shifter cable exit from the shifter body and the subsequent routing is tortuous. I'm just guessing but the little tongue may be there to mitigate that in some way. IIRC that was not part of the first generation of under bar tape cabling. Maybe Shimano has a reason for it. Does seem as if those should be available to use with any cable set.

The end cap with the tongue (also called nose) are available separately. Seen them on ebay for the SP41 cables. Your local shop may have some. Just need to be sure that the end cap fits the outer cable and also fits inside the shifter body.
