I finally Found it! The bike with holes in it.
Way back a few lifetimes ago when I started wasting time er uh learning such great knowledge here, there was a reference to a post about a fabulous bike that had holes in the frame, intentionally. Something like that Masi with the slots in the chain stays but on a larger scale. A few weeks ago I spent some time googling and looking and found it, I think. Lots of gorgeous bikes on this site. https://www.frameteller.it/

That's a pretty haggard looking saddle for an otherwise clean looking bike. Also I think it would be interesting if someone were to take a computer aided engineering program and make some models studying how some of these drilling techniques actually weaken components or in this case a frame.

It looks like the holes were pulled to attempt to provide some strength where the frame was slotted so some thought went into it.

What kind of stem is that?

And holes weaken a structure; if reinforced sufficiently to overcome that it weighs more.
Form over function will sell, but lose.

This bike was not built to be mass marketed and offered with a lifetime frame warranty. And these holes weren't formed by some hobbyist on a knee mill after thinking about it over a 12 pack of Bud Light. Some thought went into it.

This is the above referenced bike along with Dario Pegoretti (L) and Lino Messori at his shop in Modena. Lino only built about 150 bikes in his lifetime, but these were highly regarded for their craftsmanship. The example above was likely more of concept bike, exploring the limits of what could be done with the medium, but it was a fully functional (if not practical) result. I believe that it resides in a museum in Italy somewhere. I have had brief conversations with Paolo Chiossi, a strong advocate and friend of Lino's and he provided this photo which is particularly interesting to me since I also have Pegoretti.
On a side note: I met Joe Bell last year at the MADE bike show in Oregon. We chatted briefly and he remembered my Messori, which amazed me since that man has painted an awful lot of bikes!

This isn't about weight. Those holes are for cooling. To keep the frame from smoking under a super strong rider who flexes it so much it gets too hot to touch. (You can see that heat took its toll on the seat.)

Yes. I've designed and built enough equipment and machinery to understand removing material weakens a part and adding material adds weight. I was just replying to BG that it appeared they gave thought to how they pulled the holes rather than cutting them to preserve some strength around the holes. If you will look at the bike, you can see it was not going to be ridden by a clydesdale, used to commute, tour, or deliver newspapers. For its purpose, the methods were just fine for the era it was used.
