Fair price on a tandem
A friend of mine accepted a Schwinn Tandem on trade and now we are trying to figure out what is a fair price. There really is very little demand for them in our area, so that's going against him. Let me know what you guys think.

The shipping is a killer. So its all about the value in your local market. Given your comments, not much. Low end tandem, with really high shipping cost. Hopefully you can find someone local that wants it, maybe for around $150, as it appears to be in great shape. Condition will sell that bike.
I passed on a free one last week, in not nearly as nice of condition.

hey, wait!! I'd love that tandem. If I didn't live a couple states away. I've been looking for a Schwinn Twinn in Michigan on Craigslist all summer, and I can tell you that NO seller is asking less than $150 for a rideable tandem. Prices have been in the $250-$350 range. The only bike I found for $100 (actually, $50, said the husband of the seller) was a '60's model that was so badly rusted, it wouldn't roll.

With drum brake and multi-speed, it should go for more than the normal single-speed coaster-brake tandems. And around here, those will be $100-$200, maybe more for "Schwinn" brand.

Year???
I paid roughly $550 - $600 shipped on my 1973 Schwinn Twinn Tandem Deluxe (blue) a few years back. It needed a lot of love (chrome polish, rear reflector), which I gave it plenty and I was really wanting a tandem to play around with. Yours appears in good shape, I would say $350 - $450 in a local market perhaps more buyer dependent. If it was within an hour or two drive at $150, I would be tempted to go ahem... "look at it" with intent to buy.
If you're trying to sell it, your best bet is the following:
Get the serial number & date it.
LOTS of photos (so the person who buys it can put it back together) to photobucket or other online photo sharing presence.
TWO bicycle boxes, cut them such as they can slide over the frame and each other (you want them as short and narrow as you can get them (less money to ship = more money to you).
ZIPLOCK BAGS for the small parts.
Take everything apart, tape ziplock bags to frame, pedals in bag, wheels to frame - cardboard spacing, etc. snug it all into the two boxes.
Get a shipping estimate.
Put it up on e-bay with all the photos, and one showing it packed up ready to ship.
That gets you out of your local market and into other areas of the country with people really wanting a "cheap" vintage tandem (a.k.a. <$1,000).
If you do local pickup only, expect it to only go for $150 - $200.
Also note that the Atom Drum Brake Hub is usually priced >$100, shame to see a bike in such nice condition parted out though.
P.S. You are 15hrs away from me (30hrs roundtrip). In Alabama, we measure distance in time.
