The names are just series designations assigned throughout the years. If I recall, the SingleTrack name only ever applied to 900-series bikes. With the 800 series, the very first ones just had a number. Then they started using Antelope. Later, they went to MountainTrack.

I had a 820, a bit too small for me. But it was fun and tough. Alas, I split the headtube avoiding a car... Well. *I* avoided the car, the bike did not..

@madpogue, you are right. I just checked the 800 I have at work, and it is a MountainTrack. Now, I have to check the two at home.

The older per-suspension Trek MTBs are all good. Once they went to suspensions, I see a lot of worn out forks. The old rigid frames could survive a zombie apocalypse!
I don't really like Florida, but I do like the Pinellas Trail! If we could find a decent camp site, we would probably spend part of the winter there. Another benefit is the nearby airport with super cheap non stop flights back home (Allegiance Air).

Fort DeSoto and a couple of K Campsites... which are nearby the trail(s)! Have you considered Wintering at a Trailer Park? Or RV Park? We get lots of snowbirds who flock down to those who wants to live cheap as possible without owning a Condo or Home. There are Rentals that are quite affordable (Trailers, Beach Homes, Small Houses (furnished and unfurnished or Semi-Furnished).
Surprisingly, Folks have been reverting to AirBnB for seasonal rentals! The outlook is looking really good in that area!

They are functionally OK, but the SRAM ones on my 800 Sport Singletrack aren't the most durable (bike otherwise is quite bombproof). I need to get replacements for my 3 x 7 Shimano Altus drivetrain.

^^^^ +1; the entry-level GripShifters from that period were made of a rather brittle species of plastic; many of the bikes from that era that we come across have shifters that are, as my wife puts it, @$$-ploded. We just came into a later-ish ('97?) 800 Sport Singletrack, and the grip shifters are mismatched. I'd bet a nickel and an old cable that the one with the more robust-feeling plastic is a replacement.
BTW, I stand corrected about the Singletrack nomenclature. Initially, they only applied it to the 900-series bikes. Later, around '96-'97, you'd see "Singletrack series" on the seat stays of some 800-family bikes. It's a bit of a name game; reminds me of how the auto companies reuse / reprise model and series names over the years and decades.

Nuther lope, though it don't say so. 1995 850 so it shares much of the genome. I obtained this via CL late in the last century and rode it stock for a few years. A couple of years ago I "dropped" the front end using Schwinn copies of the SR Randnner bars. I like this configuration and regularly put many miles on it. Very comfortable. It's a Jeep, not the best at anything but very good at everything.

My daughter started a bike club at her high school, and dear old Dad had to source some bikes for kids that didn’t have one or couldn’t get it to school. I picked up this Mountain Track and two Antelopes over time from Craigslist and our bike coop.

Picked up one just today a 92 850 Antelope in Sour Grape with Exage 400 LX components, appears to be mostly intact. I didn't really need another bike but at $20 I couldn't say no. Too wet to do much today but looking forward to wiping it down, fixing the flat front tube and seeing how it rides and stops
In as found condition with flat front tire

^^^^ Oh that's yummy, one of the few dark colors that actually stand out in the rain. You are hereby required to post porn pics of this bike next August in the purple bike thread, when it will be the color of the month.

Millennia?
I have an ‘89 830 Antelope someone gave me last year and decided to use it for my winter in-town conditioning bike. The indexed Suntour XCE 3x7 still working well but I rather not have the OvalTech chainrings. Otherwise a great little bike for winter night rides in the snow.
Anyone here still riding these?

Ooo, I love that yellow! Bright and sunshiney, without being garish.

A friend of mine has an 800 Antelope he's owned a LONG time. Uses it as a winter commuter and 'guest' bike I think. Recently asked me to go through the whole bike. Though I have never taken this amount of trouble on what some would call a 'lower end' bike...I completely re-habbed the stock 100GS components, did a full maintenance/repack, new consumables and BB, and even sandblasted an re-painted the original steel bars/stem because he said they were a perfect fit for him. Came out great and he still loves it!

Caught a break from the Atmospheric river we have been experiencing (read heavy rains) to get the 850 out for a test ride and get some better shots. Its needs some work but I am not gonna complain for $20. Got the rear trigger shifter to work cleanly but the front still needs work, the knobby tires give a pretty bouncy ride so I am going to get some Schwable Jet City tires for this bike. Should be fun to tinker with.

@ryansu , did those shifters suffer from the usual thing, where the old lube turns peanut-buttery and the pawls don't click? If so, what's your potion for breaking up that lube and getting them working again? I'm looking for something relatively non-toxic to use. I've use PB Blaster, etc in the past, but would rather not.
