Got back from our trip to Italy on Monday night. Too tired to ride on Tuesday but did a nice 30 mile, solo ride yesterday and a good 40 mile ride today with my buddy Frank C. Visited several major cities in Italy and a few places in Sicily and was totally surprised at the lack of cyclist. Probably saw no more than 10 the entire time we were there. Couldn't ever find a bike shop to see about renting a bike.

Another 15 mi ride in Santa FE, NM. Strava has something new I guess. Shows "Massive Relative Effort" and score of 207 in red. I guess that means I worked hard.

Earlier this morning around 10:30 or so, I ventured out and rode down to the James River here in Richmond, VA. I kept on going, heading towards downtown Richmond and onto the Boulevard Bridge (aka the "nickel bridge" --- as legend has it, it used to cost a nickel way back in the day). I turned around at one of the parking lots for mountain biking trails and came back, and rode back home, taking different side roads for something different. 24 miles in 1:37 for an avg speed of 14.8 mph or something like that...

Here's a better shot (taken from the Boulevard Bridge on the way back) of the James River and the old railroad bridge. The James River is legendary for kayaking, and "rock hopping" in the summertime. It is wildly unpredictable for wading, as the riverbottom will be 2' deep, 3' deep, etc... and then all of the sudden 8' deep (sink hole)!!

Took 7 hrs, but I completed my first century on Thursday. I got 3850 feet of ascent. Hope to crack out 30 once it clears up.

I got out early this morning for a 2.0 hour ride.

I'm down in California taking care of a ranch I used to live on, while the owners are visiting grandchildren. There is this one route that I've ridden many times, a few years ago I did it two days in a row. It starts at the bottom of Sulfur Creek at 150' and for the first 16 miles it's a gentle climb.But then suddenly it turns straight up the canyon side with the steepest hills seen I've ever seen. And besides being super steep it continues for 3 miles of straight up where it peaks at 2600', a one house town, called mercuryville or 1/2 mile high city. Once much bigger, 8 bars and one church. Soon after that the road becomes a fast decent to little Sulfur Creek , then heads back up again, just as steep, but not as long. At the summit you can see for miles, Alexander Valley, wine grapes everywhere, except yesterday there was the wildfire smoke that covers most of the West Coast so the view wasn't as spectacular as usual, yesterday the air quality at home in Bend was 187, unhealthy, only 13 points from very unhealthy. Then a quick decent to the bottom and a 14 mile ride back to my car. It was getting late, I only had a rear light and I was long overdue to give the animals on the ranch their evening feed, so after expending all of my energy climbing the hills I had to ride as fast as I could to get back to the ranch. It was easily the hardest day I've ever had on the bike.



I was going to take some pictures from the summit, but the smoke ruined the view. So here is a map of the ride.

Got in an eleven mile ride from home this afternoon after driving almost all the way to the start of a ride that was cancelled due to wet weather. About 90 minutes of driving altogether. Oh well, would have been a nice ride if the clouds would have parted.
Supposed to be sunny and hot Sunday. Planning a tandem ride from home on our favorite local route.

6 miles today, no less than 5 miles every day on my fat tire bike. Doesn't sound like a lot but I'm a few days away from turning 67. 3,800 miles in 32 months.

24 miles on the tandem this morning. Not quite as hot as it got within the next few hours. August in the heartland of America.

I road with my husband yesterday, but the tandem needs some work so we took our half-bikes for a mostly flat 36 miler. Tonight I'll go with a small group of women with whom I've been riding for most of the summer, probably 25-ish miles. A couple of them are easing back into cycling so we don't go far or fast, but it is definitely fun and social.

I got a late start today, which put me out riding mid-day in the heat and humidity.
After about an hour I started getting a headache, and started back home.
To be on the safe side I stopped early, but got in 80 minutes anyway.

19 miles bike commuting today. Quite humid and hot, or is that hot and humid. Yikes! Thankful for insulated water bottles with an inch or two of ice in the bottom.

44 miles through wine country down here in California where I'm staying for 3-4 weeks. Wine grapes everywhere. Mostly Zinfandel with a few petite sarah. probably a few more that weren't posted. I passed a lot of wineries, but didn't stop. They don't give out as much free whine like they used to. 7-8 years ago. When I lived here there was a back road with a fence protecting their rows of petite sarah vines, but there was a single vine of muscat grapes growing on the fence , for a few weeks around September they were the sweetest grapes I've ever tasted. Well they tore it out and now planted their petite sarah grapes all along the fence-line. Like Thomas Wolfe said "you can't go home again". Rode by the Raymond Burr winery, the Peary Mason star. Friday I rode by the Robert Young winery, Marcus Welby, M.D. The Francis Coppola winery is just down the road, lots of great wine, food and Godfather memorabilia. I live at 3700', I thought riding near sea level would help me a lot. Doesn't seem to, just more resistance through the denser air.
