It was a pleasant if cool afternoon so I decided to go for a ride. Dusted of my "modern" road bike and pumped up the tyres. Went to go for my ride and checked the shifter. The right hand brifter doesn't change down. Bugger. It will be a slow ride in the easiest gear. So I do what any self respecting cyclist would do: take another bike. Got my old Mercian down, pumped up it's tyres and went for a ride.
Had a nice 33km ride, punctuated by calling in at a friends to see what their latest bikes were. They have just finished restoring a 1962 Cinelli and it takes pride of place on their lounge wall.
It was a bit cool now that winter is officially here and I couldn't feel my toes when I had finished.
Now I'll have to see if my LBS still has any 9 speed brifters available.

no. It would have better braking if it was. It has an old Eadie coaster hub that I've had the internals replaced with not quite as old and worn out internals. The rear brake could best be described as a speed adjuster.

Did a very social ride/pub crawl yesterday. We started at the back of one craft brewery, rode to another. After sampling their wares we then rode to another craft brewery. After the appropriate amount of time we biked back to the original brewery to sample some more. Even with a brutally cold southerly robbing calories and energy there is no way in Hades I got anywhere close to a calorie deficit for the day.
Having a tasty raspberry wheat beer to start at the first brewery we stopped at.
I decided to go very C&V. The bike is approximately 100 years old.
And I finished off the ride with a milk stout and slice of mocha cheesecake.

It may just need a good flushing. I like to remove the hood entirely first. Then get out some solvent based spray cleaner with a little red straw and flush, flush, flush.
9 times out of ten you'll be clicking again in no time.
I like to drip a little lube in afterwards. Dri-Slide is my favorite for this

It hit 108* in Merida today. Warm. I was in there for the express purpose of buying a new fan, to replace the one that died a week ago. I got the last one of the model I was looking for. Mrs. Seeds calls it the airplane fan, for good reason. It moves some air though.

On the chance that anyone is interested, I am headed to Cape Cod to prep for the Marion-Bermuda Race, which starts on Friday. You can follow it here. I am on Restive. This kind of race is handicapped according to predicted boat speed and wind direction. The scratch sheet isn't out yet, but we should be somewhere in the middle of the fleet, judging by the entry list.
If you look at the tracker, you'll see everyone going south of the most direct route initially, which is because the Gulf Stream pushes you north. Also, virtually everyone is using routing software, which should put you in the most favorable wind and current for your boat.
Here's a recent snapshot of the Gulf Stream across the course. We'll have to hit the favorable sides of that "cold eddy" shown in blue and deal with the subsequent "warm eddies" in orange. We are paying for proprietary info, which may help with that, but it's going to be tricky. Wind forecasts look pretty good so far. I'm hoping for a finish latish on the fourth day, but if the wind decreases near the island, which it sometimes does, or we break something in the Gulf Stream, which happens, we could be out there for a week.
