Hey all y’all. I’m here in New Mexico for the National Senior Games. I raced the 5K and 10K timetrials over the weekend and no one is more surprised than me to say I won them both. Good racing for me- both times were a personal best by a good margin. They were both around what coach predicted and had seemed like a pipe dream to me just a few weeks ago.
Its been a cool process to prep for something outside your wheelhouse. Learned a lot and would do it again. But first: some unstructured summer
riding, I think I earned it.

A question for the wrenches - the Shimano 7-speed grip shifter on the boy's new bike gets progressively harder to turn as you go up the cluster, so much so that he's unable to shift to the four largest cogs. Other than checking for something that might be increasing cable friction (kinks in the housing, etc), is there anything that I could do to make shifting easier for him? If nothing else, would replacing the grip shifter with a thumb shifter make things easier? TIA.

IMO, twist shifters aren't great for young hands, for the reason you are experiencing. You could do what one of the guys at the shop did for his kid; put an XT shifter and RD on the bike. Super smooth and easy.

Problem could be cable/housing issues, cable not staying in the groove inside the shifter, thus getting jammed up between edge of groove and shifter shell. Sometimes cable on wrong side of derailleur's cable anchor bolt can do this too.

I'd just go trigger. No really good 7speed gripshifts were ever made. The MRX with white plastic ring were the best, but just OK.
