Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Furnace Creek 508

So this weekend, three Bike Forums members...

Jason (Chucklehead)

Ticia

and yours truly...

will sit in the back of a van looking at a whole lot of Vireo's backside. Thankfully it's a nice view...

Why Jason agreed to crew with me after the last time, no one will ever know. I think it will go down as one of life's greatest mysteries. Ticia is flying down from Washington because she is awesome...and we'll probably drive Jason crazy with all of our blabbering all weekend. As for George (Vireo)...his only job is to pedal a measly 508 miles. Piece of cake.

There will be live webcasts starting Friday at noon on the Furnace Creek 508 website.

and his support crew, and you (Brandy) are magnificent.

Good luck!

Is your job to stop him from going off the edge of the world at mile 509?

Actually...508 is really 509.58 this year after a route change. So my job is to stop him at mile 510.

Cool! I'll be there riding half of the 508 with Team Capybara. I can't imagine doing the event solo. Didn't George ride it last year on a fixed-gear? That crosses the border into insanity, doesn't it?
Best of luck to all of you!

Very cool...good luck to you too!!

Oh, and yes...this will be his third year at 508 and he did it on a fixed gear last year. That was painful to watch. He assures me it was more painful to actually ride.

Good question!

Air conditioned van vs. 98 degrees and dry desert air?

I'll take the air conditioning, thanks.

Really though, it's not hard for me because I love him and know that he needs a good crew to pull this off. It's a small sacrifice I make to support his goals. The other two crew members...they're the ones that should get a pat on the back. Totally selfless! Or maybe they just want to hang out with me all weekend. Who knows.

Is this a race or a ride? Mass start? Drafting allowed? How much climbing? About how long does it take? Does one sleep?

All I know about this is that Hammer Nutrition likes to talk about it a lot.

Race.

Mass start. Solo racers are launched first and teams are launched a couple of hours later.

No drafting or riding together after the neutralized zone.

35,000 ft of climbing.

48 hour time limit for Solo/46 hour time for Teams

Sleep? I think that some might sleep, but most don't.

Looks like David (donkey) Jones will be there again. Say hi to him if you see him and tell him you were the one cheering him on in Ohio on the RAAM 2006!

Oh, Francis is doing it, too, (picachu).

I didn't realize Francis was racing again. I'm actually excited to get there on Friday and see everyone! I'll say hello to David.

Could have been one more BF member joining were it not for a birthday party, huh? With me along I wouldn't allow any blabbering while the camera rolled. "Quiet on the set. Rolling, aaand action..." Actually, that would have made for some classic footage, the combination of stuff outside as well as inside the party van. Woohoo! I'm sure whatever you shoot will be fine, but not anywhere near as awesome as what a seasoned professional can get

So how are you going to communicate with George? Walkie talkies?

Why, by yelling "HEY YOU!" out the window, of course.

We do a lot of leapfrogging during the day, where we'll pull ahead jump out, and then do handoffs when he rolls by. At night he has to be in the lights of the vehicle.
