Will 10 speed go faster than 9

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Will 10 speed go faster than 9

Will you be able to reach higher speeds on a 10 speed set up than a 9 because of the extra gear?

No. Only if the 9 speed cassette/freewheel has a smaller sized cog on it. But both a 9 and 10 speed might have the same 12 tooth cog.

The principle behind more gears being better is that it enables a more gradual transition between gears. This helps the rider keep the same smooth pedaling action.

RIght...both my 9 speed and my 10 speed cassettes are 12-25....so the biggest and smallest gears are the same.

Right, and even if the 10 sp had an 11, probably you could use it only downhill, unless you were at a high training level.

Helps to keep a smooth spinning action in the middle of the cassette.

Yes, exactly 10 percent faster.

Your average speed will go up because you can spin at the sweet spot longer. Try riding an undulating course in only one gear, and then with 2 gears and so on. You average speed will likely increase. Of course, each added gear has diminishing effects.

actually, quite a few riders of fixed gear bikes report exactly the opposite.

Sheldon Brown's site says it best:

"How many gears do I need?"
"Answer: One."

As long as your gearing is set up correctly for you, your cadence and the grade so you can make best power, that's the only gear you need. More gears on the cassette only give you more options (and a better chance of choosing the wrong one, IMO).

I currently only run six gears in the back of mine, FWIW. Maybe I'll add more, maybe not. Haven't decided, but I don't think it really hurts me either.

No it won't because the extra cog will cause a venturi effect at your rear dropouts thus slowing you down an extra 1-2%. And if you have a carbon frame you run a risk of an implosion if you're down under (the venturi effect goes counter-clockwise down there, just like a toilet flushing).

Yes, this is the Great Fixed Gear Paradox: you stop worrying about whether you're in the right gear or not because you're always in the wrong gear.

No, the speed isnt in a percentage faster. It is 1 faster, just like amps are 1 louder.

More gears can be useful if you spend a lot of time in high speed pace lines. If you ride mostly by yourself, then you won't notice the difference.

it really depends on how fast you pedal.

and if you put air in your tires. that helps too. i forget a lot.

come on, it's just a marketing ploy to get us all spending more cash. i mean, there's not many things on a bike that can be improved, but wow, they always seem to do it! funny, that...
