That's a shame, but at least they are being proactive about the problem.
Good stuff, Tern.

Just because your frame no. is in the posted range doesn't mean it's to be recalled... only certain numbers. My Eclipse S11i was in the range, but not a recall item.

"Tern is conducting a voluntary recall of some bike models because the company has discovered a weakness in the frame welds."

Do they still file down the weldings?

https://www.ternbicycles.com/us/featu...th-tig-welding

Edit: this image suggests they don't https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...89997151_n.jpg

Those are Link Models in the last link you posted they don't do that smooth welding on the Link models, they only do that sanding down on the Verge models. Makes you wonder why there was zero recalls on any Link model......

this is somewhat a miracle to me. The snapping ones where concentrated in the far east, mostly Singapore, AND those are the very same pedals used by Dahon since years and years and years, without any major problems ( at least I never heard of any )

A Verge X-10 just reported snapping in two today at the main frame hinge .. 140lb rider .. these Tern frames haven't been recalled .. still no word from Tern on the current reported (Tern forum) breakages after over 5 months from the first reported catastrophic break .. owners should be aware ..

welding at the hinge ..Yea I read, the recall notice was about welding quality issues

Lou asked : A little like the BF tikit recall last year?

no, AFAIK, there the steel steerer column was 2 sleeved tubes over each other ,
the replacement was a single piece with a stepped external Butt.

in that single piece with a thicker wall on the bottom the a thinner one on top.. smaller OD, with the same ID

Forks on Tikits bolt around the steerer tube, bottom, so the hyperfold cable can pass through there.

That was last year's recall.. these frames are breaking this year and aren't being recalled as of yet.. the customer's aren't being told if it's safe to ride their bikes or not.. there has been no official response to the last 8+ reported catastrophic breaks where the frames literally break in two.. the owner's of the broken frames dating back 5 months have not even received an official response as reported on the Tern forum..

The aircraft Biz has many ways to detect defects in welds because there is the money to buy that equipment .

I believe some Verge X-10 frames were in last year's recall. See:

so, for clarity:

there was a previous recall of verge/eclipse frames. now, link/node frames are being reported for "catastrophic failure", but no official recall has been issued. is this correct?

Hank, are you following the reported frames breaking in two on the Tern forum? .. as a Tern dealer, have you been notified to alert customers to potential issues or stop selling any particular models? Have you sent recall notices to your customers? Is this problem just isolated to UK riders?

That's how I read it.. there's like 300 + replies to the frame breaking thread .. in order to read them, you have to register with the forum .. the latest lady whose frame broke actually didn't register and only saw the one post .. once she registered, then she found she was not alone with falling on the ground in a heap..
