Rock Hill Velodrome
Does anyone have any updated information about this project? I haven't heard much for a few months.
Last I heard the talks with the city were going well, and it was looking like it was gonna happen.
Anyone know of a (very tentative) date? How long does it take to build something like this once ground is broken?
Anyone know what it's going to be like? I'm assuming outdoor, but what length, material, banking?
I'm really excited. I've never gotten to ride on a track before. I'll be living in Charlotte when I graduate (May), so it'll be right down the road. I'm 6 feet, about 170 at race weight, I'm hoping I might actually be decent at track racing, since I'm kind of built for it.
Plus, any excuse to buy another type of bike is cool with me.

Construction on the bike track could start next summer and finish in 2012.
Sounds like it's gonna be a pretty awesome track though.
City leaders want to attract bicycle enthusiasts to a state-of-the-art track that can host Olympic training events. There are also plans for an Olympic BMX dirt bike course. Both of these attractions will be unrivaled on the East Coast.
I really, really hope nothing happens to stop this. There's a good chance I'll be living in Charlotte for a while, and I'd love to do track racing. This will bring so many more cyclists to the Charlotte area, just for the track.

Mapquested it. It falls within my 2 hour window.
Starting Location
High Point, NC
Ending Location
Rock Hill, SC
Total Travel Estimates: 1 hour 55 minutes / 106.85 miles
even though Concord would work better for me... like in the infield of Lowes Motor Speedway.

Should be about 30-45 minutes for me, depending on where it is exactly, and where in Charlotte I'm living at the time.

Got a little more info from the Rock Hill Velodrome website.
They said construction should be able to start this summer! I'm not sure what a dedicated road course is, or how good the MTB trails will be, but I foresee myself spending a lot of time down there. Hell, I might have to move there.
The Rock Hill City Council has approved the Riverwalk development that includes the velodrome. It's official! The Cycling Center of the Carolinas will include a 250m track, dedicated road course, bmx/supercross track, mtb trails, and connectivity to the Carolina Thread Trail. Next steps include organizational meetings in winter 2009. Stay tuned!

Be careful with the Fuji Track Pro. Fuji (i.e. nashbar) is blowing the frames out for $200 because of a variety of issues (including not being able to take a decent sized chain ring). The problem is, that people are slapping just any kind of fork on them - putting the wrong fork on a track bike can ruin it for track. Something to be aware of.
