Wow. I'm pretty shocked at the number of people that hasn't seen Breaking Away. It won an Oscar for crying out loud!!!
As for American Flyers, I just could never get over the evil bearded Russian guy. He looked like a linebacker not a bike rider. It had its moments, but its too dated with the soundtrack and the Costner 'stache.

(Yes, I know it was so the audience could better see the facial expressions.)

There are a number of movies that won one or more Oscars that I haven't seen, and probably not care to see. Hey, I did see Alien that year, and it did win an Oscar for best visual effects.

I saw BA when I was about 10 yrs old and I immediately connected with the outcast even amongst his friends, the need to go his own way. It inspired me to start to ride. Rode all through high school and college and then fell out of it. Then Lance got me inspired again. So what if he lied, he saved me! I recently watched BA again and I sadly identify now with the dad's role than Dave.
That being said......it is a MUST see!

I was just a scruffy kid when I first saw Breaking Away, and I loved it. It didn't inspire me to start biking because I was already riding my BMX all over town, but it did eventually lead to my first road bike which was a Nishiki. I used to ride it with the Barber of Seville Overture running through my head. I saw the movie again as an adult and I thought it held up very well. It's been great learning all the trivia in this thread. I had no idea that the main character was based on a real person, nor did I recognize the actor in Django Unchained.

It's all highly subjective; we like what we like. Having said that, scroll down to the Quicksilver Rule.

Mrs. Grouch and I have 13 year old triplet grandsons. We invited them over for pizza and to watch "Breaking Away". They said they enjoyed it because movie is more about growing up than about bicycling.
They asked if we ever watch more modern movies so Mrs. Grouch suggested "Moonrise Kingdom," another growing up movie. It may have been made more recently but I think that its time frame is the 50's. They still want to see it because it has a scene in which the girl and boy go swimming in their underwear. I'm looking forward to it.

I liked Premium Rush, it's like Fast and Furious for the bike world. Just because it's a satire film, doesn't make it bad. Instead of complaining, be happy theres another bike movie. It's just like the guys on CVN complaining about NYC Taxi, shut up and be happy theres a car show on tv again- with a crown vic in the main cast. They should be hoping it doesn't end up like Fastlane, Drive, and Knight Rider.

One of the best cycling movies I've ever seen... Rising from Ashes.
Rising from Ashes (2012) - IMDb
Not so much a movie with a plot as a documentary. Terrific watch none the less. It's on Netflix.

Hard to believe its been almost 40 years since Breaking Away was released. I went to see it when 1st released. Wore my Guerciotti/Milano track jacket to the theater. Not because of the movie, its just what I wore every day. I was obsessed with bike racing. And then to see all my racing contemporaries in the movie, i was amazed. The Team Cinzano riders were all Chicago locals.
I'm a career painting contractor. And around 2000-2001 I painted for a guy in the North Shore of Chicago. He had a few pictures of the making of Breaking Away hanging on the wall. Turns out he dated/ lived with Robin Douglass for years and lived with him in the house I was painting. One of the bathrooms had column after column of dates and her weight written right on the wall.
